What are the file requirements when uploading to the site?

What are the file requirements when uploading to the site?

Whether you’re uploading a proposal for a project or a sample to your profile, please ensure that your audio file is in the following format:

  • MP3 files
  • Sample rate: 44.1kHz
  • Constant Bitrate: 96-128 Kbps
  • Bit depth: 16 bit
  • Mono
  • Smaller than 100 MB
  • Do not use any emojis in the file name

Audios should peak no higher than -3db on the digital full-scale to accommodate the platform’s conversion process from WAV to MP3. So if you get an error while uploading, check these parameters since most errors occur because of incorrect file formats/parameters.

If you’re looking for additional audio post-production tips and tricks, check out our piece on How to edit voice overs!

How does the Voice123 ranking system work?

How does the Voice123 ranking system work?

When you submit a proposal for a project, clients are able to ‘like’ it and create a booking from it. Your ranking score is a percentage of liked proposals out of the total number of proposals you’ve submitted in the past 12 months and bookings that clients have created from those proposals.

Your ranking score gets updated on a weekly basis, and it’s taken into account when Voice123 ranks you for incoming projects. Only the following ranking scores will be seen publicly on a voice actor’s Voice123 profile:

  1. Top 10%
  2. Top 20%
  3. Top 30%

To ensure your ranking score stays as high as possible, only submit proposals to projects for which you are a perfect fit and the type of projects you’d like to be invited to again. This can greatly increase the chance of clients liking your proposals.

You can also share your booking link with clients and ask them to create a free booking with you when you work together.

How to update your ACH or Wire payment settings?

ACH is a direct deposit/bank transfer, so we’ve partnered with Stripe Connect to make it easier and faster to receive payments. With that in mind, if you’d like to receive Secure Payments via ACH or Wire transfer, please take the following steps:

Step 1: Log into your Voice123 profile.

Step 2: Navigate to the Payment Preferences and complete the missing fields.

Step 3: In the “Payment Method” section, select “ACH / Wire transfer,” then click on “SET ACH / WIRE DETAILS.” You’ll be redirected to Stripe – follow the instructions to create your Stripe account.

Step 4: You’ll be redirected to Voice123 to do a quick account validation, and then you’ll be all set to receive your next Secure Payment!

IMPORTANT: Your funds will be sent to your local bank account in your local currency. For payments in currencies other than USD, the conversion rate is set by Stripe Connect, and it may vary from day to day. Stripe Connect also takes out a 1% exchange fee.

If you already have a Stripe account and you want to use it for payments, just input the email you use for your Stripe account on the onboarding page. You will then be able to connect your existing Stripe account to Voice123.

Remember that if your bank account is in USD, Stripe Connect is completely free, and no extra fees will be charged to you. But if your bank account is in a different currency than USD, you will be charged a 1% exchange fee. Voice123 does not charge the voice actor any fee in order to receive Secure Payments. However, any ACH or Wire fees your bank charges might still apply — so check with your bank if you are in doubt.

Alternatively, if you prefer not to create a Stripe account, you can opt to receive payments via Paypal or Payoneer. These are also the options available to you if Stripe Connect does not support your country — check out this list of supported countries

If you are a non-US resident with a USD bank account, please select the corresponding option on your Payment Preferences. We won’t be able to process any Secure Payments through ACH or Wire until we receive this information. If you are experiencing a delay in receiving your payments, check that your payment information is up to date and complete the steps above so that we can resume processing your payments.

And if you need any further help or information, you can contact our Customer Success team at help@voice123.com

What are the main terms regarding voice over rates that I should know?

What are the main terms regarding voice over rates that I should know?

When negotiating the recording and payment details with a client, these are the terms you should both be acquainted with and understand.

Market: Markets can be broken up into local, regional, national, and international depending on what station or stations they’re broadcast on and what medium is involved, i.e., radio, television, etc.

Buy-out: A flat rate paid only once that “buys” the rights to use your voice. In other words, they own the work outright and for as long as they choose to use it.

Monthly retainer: An agreement between you and the client according to which the client pays a set amount each month to compensate you for ongoing work. The rate should be based on the average amount of work per month. We strongly encourage you to set a maximum amount of work the client can expect from you every month at that fixed rate.

Pick-ups: Pick-ups are recordings that take place after the main voice-over session has been concluded and thought to be completed. The possibility of changes and the number of pick-ups allowed should be negotiated before the initial recording to avoid any chance of exploitation.

Per hour: Charging an hourly rate based on the length of time you spend in the studio.

Per project: Charging a flat rate for a script, regardless of the time spent in the studio.

Per session: Charging a flat rate for the recording session (the time you spend in the studio) regardless of the number of projects recorded.

Per spot: Charging a flat rate for each commercial spot, regardless of the time spent in the studio.

Residuals: Additional compensation for a commercial, above and beyond the initial payment, based on the number of times a spot is broadcast. Residuals are usually only applicable to Union commercials.

Scratch track: A temporary recording that is a ‘place-holder’ for the final voice-over. Not usually recorded at ‘broadcast quality.’ Production facilities tend to use scratch tracks to assist them with timing when designing TV/video/flash presentations.

Session: The usually fixed period of time allocated to a specific recording that will be spent in the recording studio on any given day. If you leave the studio and return on a different day, even if you continue working on the same project, it’s a new ‘session.’

Union rates: When you’re a member of a voice actors’ union, they advise and promote minimum set rates depending on the project’s scope and where it will be broadcast.

For more information, check out our community-vetted and curated list of voice over resources on The Booth, like our collection of free messaging templates that you can save and use from our client communications checklist.

FAQs: Getting started as a voice actor

FAQs: Getting started as a voice actor

How do I start a career in the voice over industry?

Starting a career in the voice over industry requires training. So, we recommend voice coaching and audio tech training because you need fundamental skills in both fields to succeed.

If you would like to read a guide written for voice actors by voice actors, please take a look at The Voice Over Guide. We’d also recommend signing up for our Free membership, so you can get a feel for both the voice-over industry and Voice123.

Once you have your samples (professionally produced to industry standards), you can upgrade your membership. You can learn more about the different memberships we offer by visiting our memberships page.

We wish you every success with your voice-over career, and if you have any questions about Voice123, contact our Customer Success team at help@voice123.com

What equipment do I need to get started?

Before you get started with the equipment, you’ll need a functional home studio with a treated voice booth (or walk-in closet!) to submit proposals. Since most clients will expect you to record professional, high-quality audio.

If you are building a recording space, make sure you treat it well to prevent room echoes and reflections from ruining your audio. Once your studio is set up, you’ll need voice over equipment like:

  • A computer
  • A microphone with a USB connection or a recording interface that has one.
  • A pop filter to prevent blasts of breath caused by plosive consonants such as p’s and b’s.
  • Recording and editing software.

An excellent resource to consult is the Setting up a home recording studiosection from the Voice over Guide on The Booth, especially our piece on Equipment for voice overs.

In some cases, local voice actors are requested to record in the client’s studio, but this rarely happens in today’s world of online voice casting. Clients will consider the audio quality and your voice when listening to your proposals, so give yourself every advantage by submitting proposals with high-quality audio.

Which internet browsers work best when using Voice123?

For the best experience using Voice123, we suggest using the latest versions of Google Chrome, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge. Browser developers frequently make improvements to provide you with a faster, more secure online experience.

Some features of the Voice123 platform don’t work with an outdated or unsupported browser—and we often can’t provide technical support in this case. For the cases where the browser is not supported, we’ll show an informational banner indicating it.

Is it possible to get work as a union member on Voice123?

Yes, we work with union members from British Equity, ACTRA (Canada), SAG-AFTRA (US), and Union Des Artistes (Canada) members, but other union members are welcome as well. Union members can also quote union rates for any project they audition for, and they can even specify on their profile that they only take union work.

What does a scam look like?

A scam usually starts with a message asking for an audition or a demo. The client will then get in touch and tell you that you cannot see the script, but it will be released shortly before the recording session, and they have a local studio where they’d like you to record.

They’ll issue you a check that includes your pay and a portion that you must forward to another individual and send you to their recording studio. The check will turn out to be fake. You’ll cash it and forward the money to the other individual, but within days your bank will contact you to inform you that the check bounced. On contacting the studio, there’ll be no record of a booking for you.

Here are some tips to protect yourself from scams:

Please use caution when dealing with people you don’t know online and contact help@voice123.com to report suspicious projects.

  • Trust your instincts and never wire funds.
  • That you’re your own business and have to be cautious
  • Not to deliver ready-to-use samples without pay; watermark them or change keywords to protect yourself.
  • Not to extend payment to anyone you have not met in person.
  • To negotiate payments through safer means such as PayPal
  • If someone makes a booking for you at a studio, please contact the studio to confirm.

What is FTP, ISDN, Phone Patch, Source Connect, or ipDTL?

Under Recording & Delivery Capabilities on your profile, you will find numerous options for recording and delivering your performances to a client. FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol that’s used to transfer files between computers on a network.

Two popular FTP services you can use for sharing files are:

  • Dropbox: A file hosting service where you can store and share files.
  • Google Drive: A file storage and synchronization service created by Google. It allows users to store files in the cloud, share files, and edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with collaborators. The Google Drive option is free to use when you have a Gmail account.

ISDN, Phone Patch, Source Connect, and ipDTL are all technologies that allow the client to listen in and direct performances in real-time.

ISDN and Phone Patch are the original hardware-based technologies that run over traditional telephone lines, with ISDN being the industry standard. The hardware is relatively expensive but is still very common in the industry.

Source Connect and ipDTL are computer-based technologies that connect over the internet. Both can be subscription-based, and ipDTL is even browser-based for added simplicity.

FAQs: Voice Actor Profile

FAQs: Voice Actor Profile

How can I improve my voice actor profile?

Think of your profile as your résumé; the more complete it is, the better. After all, this is what clients will see when they click on your card in the search window. So here are a few ways to improve your voice actor profile.

  1. If you have a limited selection of Playlists on your profile page, you’re unlikely to appear in searches.
    • Try to populate your profile with as many diverse Playlists of your recorded work as possible.
    • Upload single samples – not collages.
    • The samples need not be longer than 20-30 seconds. The key is to come across as both versatile and accomplished.
  2. Add a profile picture because it makes your profile more personable.
  3. It’s good practice to choose your auditions carefully and only submit proposals for those projects you really feel you can voice well.
  4. Ensure all your invitation settings are correct by enabling these options:
    • Any rate
    • Allow clients to invite you to submit proposals
    • Allow Voice123 to invite you to submit proposals
    • Get invites for projects that require custom samples
    • Get invited to projects where you quote the price
  5. Ensure all your notification settings are correct by enabling these options:
    • You were invited by a client to submit a proposal
    • You were invited by Voice123 to submit a proposal
    • Your proposal was reviewed by a client
  6. Indicate your delivery options:
    • Select digital delivery.
    • If you agree to go to a designated studio in the area, add your location.
  7. Add your additional vocal abilities (include details like accents, characters, and impersonations you can do).
  8. Add the Payment methods you accept.

Learn even more about the benefits of having a complete voice actor profile from successful voice actors on the Voice Over Guide!

How do I edit my invitation settings?

You can edit your invitation settings and email preferences by following these steps:

  1. Login to your Voice123 account.
  2. Locate the menu widget icon in the top left corner (three horizontal lines).
  3. Click on Invitation Settings.

How to receive more invitations to projects?

How to receive more invitations to projects?

Our website works as a marketplace, and we aim to connect voice actors to a diverse pool of clients. So here are some suggestions to help you receive more invitations to projects and increase your chances for success.

Create a detailed profile

  • Fill out your profile completely and professionally with high-quality samples.
  • Avoid leaving blank sections; the more information you include, the easier it will be for the system to match you with projects.
  • Ensure you include one Playlist for all skills and services offered.
  • Check out our voice over guide to learn more about the benefits of a complete voice actor profile.

Include a variety of samples

  • Try to add a sample for every age, language, additional service, and category that you have selected in the ‘Voice Details’ section.
  • Review your audio quality to ensure your voice is being showcased in the best way possible. Be especially mindful of background noise, ambient noise, mouth clicks, and plosives.
  • Be very specific when naming your samples in order to improve your chances of appearing in our search.

Set your budget preferences

  • Filter out invitations that don’t meet your budget requirements so you only receive invitations that match your profile.

Improve your ranking score

  • Your ranking score impacts how early you receive invitations to projects. To improve your ranking score:
  • Only submit proposals to projects for which you are a perfect fit and to those projects you’d like to receive similar invitations in the future. This practice can increase the chances of clients liking your proposals.
  • Ask clients to create a free booking with you when you work together. You can make it seamless for clients to book you by sharing your free booking link with them.
