Wendy was named after J.M. Barrie’s quintessential storyteller because her mother was a storyteller, too. Wendy’s vocal talents were developed by listening to and imitating the records her mother placed in her hands, where she studied classic roles performed by spectacular voice talents. Peter, Paul, and Mary, Cinderella, (the Disney and the Julie Andrews..) Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Sesame Street, The Muppet Show… she would “bubbah boo” with Baloo, whistle to the birds, and squeak the mice obsessively, much to her parents amazement, and sometime chagrin. (Any parent of a child fixated with Frozen can identify with the mind numbing repetitiveness of a kid trying to get it right.)
When there was no music available for land-drills, and her synchronized swimming routines were written to Chorus Line, Chicago or Sweet Charity, her teammates would would say “Wendy, you sing it. You sound the most like the recording”.
Adolescence had her imitating Lilly Tomlin and Carol Burnett comedy skits. Her college years saw her through the joys and stresses of a theatre major, and a double minor in Psychology and Humanities. One of her greatest healers was discovered the day she learned to fall asleep laughing by listening to Monty Python clips. Graduate school at DePaul/ Goodman School of Drama gave her the phonetic alphabet and cracked open the language of dialects in a whole new way.
The imitations have since developed into her own powerful voice that have brought her jobs on stage, screen, behind podiums, and behind a lot of microphones. Her reading of Young Fredle by Cynthia Voight received a finalist nod from The Odyssey Awards. Two children’s books, Cloudette where she played a lost little cloud, and Bink & Gollie where she embodied a kind hearted a Russian fortune teller, have been turned into animated films.
She knows the difference between Southern with a hard “R” and the genteel Southern where the “ahr’s disseapeah almost entiahly…” She knows long vowels, hard consonants, splashy “S’s” and glottal stops. Wendy has a musical ear, facile voice, nimble mind and when something strikes her as truly funny, she has a hearty, head- thrown- back laugh.
She’s fun. And she’s still growing, challenging herself and ever evolving into more of a pro. She suggests you hire her so she can stop writing about herself in the third person…
Just hire her already…
