We all seek voices to relate to, resonate with, and reflect our own strength and spirit.
22-year-old Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist HARIZ projects such a voice for pop music. Touting clever lyricism, uplifting energy, and dynamic delivery backed by a lifetime of classical training and impressive instrumental chops, his three-dimensional approach movies bodies, provokes thoughts, and connects hearts as evidenced by millions of streams and a growing number of accolades.
As a result, he magnifies the scope of pop on his own terms.
“I want to give the music world what I feel is missing”, he explains. “So many young people are only concerned with outer image. There’s more to life than that though. It’s a front for them wanting to be seen and asking to have their concerns and thoughts heard. We all share feelings of pain, fear, and happiness. Hopefully, I can be the one who says, ‘We’re all human, and I hear you’.”
HARIZ recognized a capability for that empathy in tandem with his discovery of music. At four-years-old, his parents immersed him in the world of classical piano. By the age of 17, he achieved the “Highest Tier of National Ranking” from the Classical Musical Association. While developing these virtuosic talents, he also became intensely passionate about popular music, studying the catalogs of everyone from The Eagles to Lionel Richie, to Rihanna and Maroon 5, and penning original songs in middle school.
As music consumed him, he faced tragedy head-on with the death of his mother. “It definitely rocked the boat,” he sighs. “At the same time, it matured me in a lot of ways and gave me a new perspective on life. I viewed the world in a different way. I wanted to help others, and music was my way to do it.”
After years of quietly sharpening a signature style, he became the 2016 recipient of the ASCAP Harold Adamson Lyric Award in Pop Music. A year later, he unveiled his breakthrough single “OVRBRD.” It organically occupied real estate on top playlists and racked up over 3 million cumulative Spotify streams between the original version and the Zookëper remix in addition to receiving early acclaim from The Line of Best Fit, EARMILK, YourEDM, Dancing Astronaut, and more. He also attracted the attention of pop music heavy-hitters such as Derek Fuhrmann [Kygo, Phillip Phillips], PJ Bianco [Nick Jonas, ARIZONA], and Ari Leff [Demi Lovato, Charlie XCX].
He kicked off 2019 with the inventive Britney Spears tribute mash-up “Baby One More Time x Oops!...”, updating the diva’s classics with a fresh fire and simmering piano. A pair of slick, stunning, and soaring singles followed. His glitchy bop of “Morning” transmits an uplifting reminder to a significant other. “You realize how truly gorgeous someone is in the morning,” he goes on. “It’s this feeling of first seeing someone when they wake up and celebrating that natural beauty.”
With his unpredictable sound and relatable soul, HARIZ’s voice will ultimately resonate for a long time to come.
“When you listen, I hope you realize that someone else understands what you might be going through,” he leaves off. “So many people don’t feel heard. As long as you can feel heard in my songs, that’s all I’m asking for.”
