“Comfort for the soul” is a term used to describe my pipes. I’m the neighbor next door, with an inviting, masculine tone and a rich, warm quality that captures and holds the listener’s attention. My personal training with the Such A Voice Voice-Over Training Company sharpened my craft, prompting this testimonial from my voice-over coach Chris Okawa: “John possesses an innate, conversational command, with a comfy, ‘lived-in’ sound."
When I was just a small boy, I enjoyed creating different characters with my sister, giving them distinctive, entertaining voices. The activity initially annoyed our other siblings, but they eventually came to realize their comic value and ability to deliver a good laugh. Those silly young voices have helped my sister and I form a bond that has strengthened over the years, and nurtured an appreciation for the conversational/communication skills that are foundational for solid relationships. I enjoy telling stories—my own, and those of others—a passion that naturally led to a career as a voice-over professional. My voice has similar tones to Morgan Freeman, Sam Elliot and Tom Hanks so I love it when I get the chance to act in those low registers.
