HOW IT ALL BEGAN;
I always knew... (as cliched as it sounds) I always knew I wanted to sell things I could believed in with my voice. So the truth is it was selling my voice that made the most sense to me... I had a way with words as a poet so combining the two made even more sense to me.
Then DISASTER STRUCK!
In 1983 I won a poetry contest in the adult division. When I went to the awards night, I found myself the only adult winner in a room full of grade school children. As I sat there listening to the little cherubs and joined in with the audience in applauding their work, I had no idea what was about to happen.
When it came my turn I stood up and looked out over the audience when suddenly it hit me. Knees shaking, voice cracking, sweat dripping STAGE FRIGHT!!!!
Embarrassed to have flubbed so bad when the kids all did so well I vowed from that day forth I would conquer this fear. And so I did. In 1985 I stood on stage at the Civic Center in Cheyenne, Wy. I was stationed at the local AF base. The Air Force Tops in Blue show was taking place and I was there once again as a poetry contest winner. I recited a poem I had written for their "Liberty Cruise" theme which was focused on the Statue of Liberty which had re-opened after some renovations. Unrehearsed I asked if they wanted it read or recited. They left it up to me saying all the other winners always read theirs. Recited it was. Poised with perfect delivery no fear I can honestly say I "brought the house UP" as everyone was on their feet applauding. The band members all said they never played behind the poets as well as that night. One in fact said he never even pays attention when that portion comes up, but he heard every word I spoke. The entire cast and crew made me feel as if I was truly a part of them. But the best compliment of all was to have a Viet Nam vet come up to me and say, "I just had to shake your hand... you said everything I only wish I could have said". September 2, 1985... I will never forget it not only because I had truly conquered my fear and learned that not only my words but my VOICE could move people. It also happened to be my birthday and probably the most remarkable one ever, I was born into a new world that day. The world of Voice Talent.
(You can hear a rendition of that poem by selecting the demo "I Defend the Siren" here on my VOICE123 page)
Two incidents that changed my life. Those kids taught me a valuable lesson. Be natural, be sincere and have fun and that is what comes across. The "butterflies" never go away and in fact I look forward to them. I have since been a selected speaker on many occasions and in many different ways. I have recorded commercials and delivered talks and seminars for local recycling programs in Indiana. Was a member of the Indiana Department of Correction's Speakers Bureau. Done numerous answering machine messages for business and personal clients (one even told me that people confessed to calling just to hear my voice). As a past Executive Director of the Hudson Valley Raptor Center, a home and sanctuary for injured birds of prey, I delivered the Center's messages on hundreds of occasions to thousands of people.
I have also had the honor, privilege and somewhat difficult task of speaking at funerals of very close friends, family and my parents. Once again the voice prevailed and is a testimony to the fact that I can deliver what needs to be said whenever it needs to be said.
If your message needs to be delivered and you know you need a talent with natural clarity, sincerity and a distinguished voice that stands out in a crowd, odds are you need to get my voice behind your message!
