As a former elementary school teacher, I used my voice constantly. I was always "on stage"- reading, presenting, acting and vocalizing to my students. In the classroom and in the educational workshops I presented over ten years I was told many times that I had a soothing, comforting, even motherly tone to my voice. I was also able to vary the loudness of my voice from very quiet and subdued to loud and commanding when needed.
After I retired and became a stay-at home mother, I noticed an advertisement for a voice over class in our local newspaper. It sounded interesting and exciting, so I decided to give it a shot. The class was produced by the Creative Voice Development Group (voicecoaches website). We were given the basics of doing voice over, and then were asked to do a "cold reading" in front of a microphone to be recorded and played back for the class to critique. I was extremely nervous, yet excited at the same time. After that experience I was hooked.
I found a local voice over school (Edge Studio in Fairfield and New York- edgestudio website) and began to study the craft. I completed their basic training program and made a narration demo.
In order to stay fresh and gain more experience, I volunteer for Reading For the Blind and Dyslexic in New Haven, Connecticut. There I have gained invaluable experience behind the microphone. I became experienced enough to narrate and direct my own work- mostly reading college texts and novels. Unfortunately, the New Haven office became a casualty of the recession, and will be closing its doors on May 7, 2009. I will be forever grateful for the experience I received there.
Currently, I take periodic refresher training from Bruce Bayley Johnson of Guilford, Connecticut. He has a home studio and invites participants to work on their skills via group workshops (vosites website).
