I've never had any official voice over experience where I was paid. I just change my voice all the time and sound like other people to make people laugh. I'm always told, " You should get on the radio, you have a radio voice." or, " You should be the guy that does the movie announcements on tv." I did some recording over a buddy's house, and we added some sound effects, it started out like I was doing a kids show, then turned into a serious church sermon somehow so it was just 2 characters but it was pretty funny with the sounds added. A formal presentation of more serious subject matter would not be difficult for me to perform. I change my voice so much and sing in other voices to sound like different artists so much and use other accents so much that since i've found it's an obvious talent and skill, that I should look to profit from it, since people tell me that's what I should do also. If you want some references I can give you some numbers of the people I work with, some of my family and friends, my team leader, I make them laugh all the time. " Wow you can sound like anybody" is what they say. I recorded a few hip hop tracks which requires you to write your own lyrics, which amounts to reading a script, and then saying them to a music track which you have to keep time to, you can't just read those lyrics like you would a presentation, so I'm familiar with reading to an audio track so to speak. I realize, however, that this is not necessarily a substitute for my lack of "job" experience in this field, but let me say I understand characters and personalities, and accents well. To do a certain accent you become that person. I do Christopher Walken or Deniro I become them. I'm doing a voiceover for statistical research or a documentary obviously I adopt a laidback, mildmannered, smooth, intelligent persona. A change of demeanor becomes necessary. A complete linguistic metamorphosis transpires.
I don't have any formal training. My mother taught me to read before I even entered kindergarten, I never went to preschool, so reading a script is no big deal. I have found that in recording my voice I usually need to go back over it and listen to it to be sure the syllables and the pronunciation and the pitch comes out right. Also you have to check whether you're too close to the mic or if you're talking too loud or too soft. My education is just watching and listening to celebrities and other people, and mimicking them. I started in about the 2nd or 3rd grade doing voices and I'm 28 now so I've done it for a few years.
I have recording capabilities, but I don't want to go on record as saying that I'm ready to undertake doing actual, finished production of a project on my own. I'm going to record a few things and post them on this site, and I believe that those interested will tell me if it's satisfactory or unsatisfactory. For now though I'd rather record at a studio should any jobs come available. However if I'm able to set up my environment the way it needs to be, I should be able to add music and sound effects to my projects with little difficulty. I have a few programs that I'm familiar with to work with. I used to work with amateur artists recording hip hop music. So I'm not only familiar with music production, but also with the timing of samples, and the proper levels. Music production of that type is very similar to what the majority of voice talent seekers are looking for here. You can add sound effects, you have someone who is talking over the music track, and it all has to have the right timing, the right levels, the right length.
I'll be succinct. I believe in giving the customer what they want. I've had many jobs. Some of those jobs I was good at, some I wasn't, but I am extremely skilled with voices, and I love to read. If there is any work on this planet besides something of a technical nature, that I would most suited for, it would be this. Besides, I have the attitude for this. If you want someone who sounds like a scientist to explain birthrates and the socioeconomic impact it causes in a certain region of wherever, then I become that scientist. If you want an advertisement for a backyard barbecue over at billy bobs, then I'm Billy Bob. Want people to save 20% using your airline for flights to australia? Then I'm Crocodile Dundee, I think you're getting the picture.
