How I became a voice actor:
Many years ago, my colleagues begged me to record their dental office telephone greetings so they'd sound more professional. I wondered, "Should I be getting paid for this?" Conveniently, my husband and I had some recording equipment and lots of acting experience, so it wasn't a crazy idea.
Since I was a real live Valley Girl and cheerleader in the 80's, I can revert to my high days school for certain characters. Earning a dental degree and teaching at the University of Southern California gave me the ability to sound authoritative and trustworthy while correctly pronouncing things like "Bisoprolol/Hydrochlorothiazide".
I'm used to lecturing for up to two hours at a time, so I have no problem keeping long scripts interesting and fresh from start to finish. My students frequently comment that they feel like I'm speaking directly to them.
Did I quit dentistry for voice acting? Sort of. After an extended maternity leave, a cross-country move, and the chance to build my own studio, I just never returned to dentistry. I maintain a current dental license in the State of California.
