My vocal experience comes primarily from my career. I am a high school assistant principal and former English teacher. I have a resonant voice and can range from gregarious to icy. As a teacher, I must find a way to convey the intended tone of the author and I have always found that voice acting is the best way to convey the essence of the text with my students. As an assistant principal, my voice is one of my primary tools. I use my voice to command attention, focus a crowd of 3000 high school students, convey concern and compassion to children and parents in difficult times, as well as provide collegial training and professional development to educators.
I have a BS in English Education and an MS in Educational Leadership. I learned early on while completing my coursework that one of the greatest tools that a teacher has is his voice. A well-honed voice can be used to express displeasure, disinterest, warmth, decisiveness, you name it. But more importantly the voice can elicit a myriad of reactions from those you direct it toward. It is a skill too often overlooked by professionals.
Currently, I have redirected my career back to the classroom to take on a new challenge and focus on my interests on a college level course in Media Studies. The class focuses on all aspects of Media, including film, television, radio, podcasts and commercials.
In college, I worked for several semesters at the Florida International University radio station. This experience gave me a new perspective on the importance of sounding clear and natural, particularly while cutting commercials and drops.
My home studio consists of a PC and a Mac as well as mixing boards, several XLR and USB microphones, soundproofing, industry standard software and access to a professional studio.
I am new to the profession, therefore will be working with a voice coach and continue developing my improvisational and interview skills.
