A GROUNDED VOICE FOR MESSAGES THAT MATTER
While preparing an audition for Kaiser Permanente’s Sleep and Relaxation CD, Naylene lay on her back and experienced the script as a patient would. The approach landed her the job. During the studio session, the read worked so well that she briefly nodded off behind the microphone—just long enough to lose her place in the script and give the client and producer a good laugh from the other side of the glass.
That project captures how Naylene approaches a script: she begins with the person who needs to hear it. Her healthcare voice work has placed her in the role of doctor, behavioral health mentor, mental health advocate, and reassuring mother—covering subjects from advance directives and cancer care to patient education on medical devices and medications.
But not every listener is a patient. Her corporate voice work has included the role of tutor for a large tax-preparation course and instructor in a four-hour Harris Corporation safety program totaling nearly 400 files.
BELIEVABLE—WHETHER THE STORY IS REAL OR IMAGINED
Naylene has a particular gift for dramatized first-person storytelling—from healthcare testimonials to museum exhibits and documentaries. She approaches real experiences with the emotional truth of someone who lived them.
That same believability brings fictional characters to life. Her range includes kids, grandmothers, a Halloween witch, Mrs. Claus—and even a whale, turtle, and polar bear. Her character work is featured in several children’s books she narrated for Kidly, an app where kids can read or listen to illustrated stories.
EXPERIENCE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE MICROPHONE
Before voiceover became the focus of her career, Naylene worked as the program and music director for her church’s small radio station in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. She then supported a ten-person radio sales team in Portland, Oregon, before opening a small agency of her own. Eventually, writing and producing commercials took a back seat to her love of voice acting.
That behind-the-scenes experience still comes into the booth with her. Naylene can self-direct, but live-directed sessions are where she excels. Got five people weighing in on a read? She’s been in exactly that session. Naylene can handle whatever you throw at her. Give her direction, and you’ll hear the adjustment in the next take—which is why sessions often wrap ahead of schedule.
A STUDIO BUILT AROUND REAL LIFE
Naylene’s home studio was woven into family life. Her three children even lent their own voices to commercials she wrote and produced. Over the years, Naylene’s voice became part of the soundtrack of their lives—from childhood into adulthood.
One day, while taking a customer on a Subaru test drive, one of her daughters heard that familiar voice in a radio commercial and proudly announced, “That’s my mom.”
That full-circle moment still makes Naylene smile. It reminds her that every script eventually leaves the booth and becomes part of someone’s real life—and “kid-approved” may still be her favorite kind of review.
