My Voice Experience

Using my voice as a "tool"...? In short--about 25 years as a radio production director/air talent to start with. Fresh out of high school, my college broadcast professor sent me to KAYS-AM (the one that didn't play music associated with my age group) in need of a PT air talent. About a year later, I took over mid-days and the production director slot. After 7 years, I took a 2 year gig as ops (and everything else but sales) director of a start-up 100Kw FM, KHAZ. Spent the next 13 years as production director/mid-day host (usually top 3 12+, #1 25-54 females...) at KICT-95, Wichita's heritage rocker. As merges transpired, it became part of Journal Broadcast Group (now E.W. Scripps), with production responsibilities covering the "non-country" stations in the group (and VT nights for 104-5 the Fox-#1 target demo nights)). At one point I, along with much of the programming & support staff was cut. I found myself owning part of what we would build into a successful restaurant/club and doing mostly local & regional voice over work at home. Not having enough to do (the more you do, the more you can do--I have also been a professional working musician since I was in college),of course, I took on production director duties at Entercom Wichita's 7 station cluster. I resigned about a year later when my mom--my only living, close relative--became ill. Not knowing when or if she would recover, I resigned--feeling it was unfair to the company or my assistant to wait for me. I was able to stay by her for her last 6 weeks. I decided life was too short to work the way I had been working. Since then, I have continued to expand my voice work, as well as develop or advise on ad campaigns, audio production, mentor students on voice work, engineering--even acting and such. And my wife of 27 years and I still play in the same band. I have decided--with a bunch of "you ought to's..." from my friend & fellow VO guy, Rick Regan, I want to pursue voice over work on a larger scale. Ya know, I'll most likely be just all about the voices & noises until I die...

My Training

Communications at Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS mentored by the late Jack Heather.
Before that, my dad was Civil Air Patrol; we had radios everywhere. I grew up with tape recorders, microphones, and speakers. I was known to have created live commercials while my dad was changing reels of home movies. I "wrote, directed and starred in" plays & skits for Cub Scouts I always liked to sing and by 6th grade I was studying music and sound pretty seriously. Add in years of instrument lessons, forensics, public speaking, and later, 3 hours of vocal music, drama and music theater every day through high school & college, and...a good chunk of music theory. If you take the music with my parallel technical path...I have been involved in studio design & construction including 4 radio properties and 4 studios of my own and have been involved with the engineering departments of nearly every radio station. I have had my hand in the back of a few transmitters, and have been used as an expert for seminars in creative production at Fort Hays State as well as high school career mentor. I have produced music from country, orchestral, punk, rock, electronica, folk, Christian rock and new age. Played 2 concerts with Gary Busey (yes, the actor) as well as picked up some more knowledge working with Emmy winning and Oscar nominated audio pioneer Joel Fein. I've produced and promoted concerts and events--it's all just one process for me I guess.
I have had something to say...a microphone in front of me...and my hand on an electronic gizmo of some kind--all at the same time--in one fashion or another--for pretty much...life. Yeah...pretty much...

My Studio Equipment

I have owned recording studios for over 30 years. Yes, I DO have analog multi-track, DAT, vinyl, cassette, VHS and all the fun stuff from the past. Big reels full of commercials & music.
For voice-over work, my stations had been using Wizard/Cool Edit/Audition since the mid 90's or something like that--so, I know the programs (have Au3, but for speed, I still like Au1.5. Built a screamer machine running XP and just released Audition 1.5. Served me until last year. 12 good years. RIP.

Additional Skills

Due to an injury, I have physical restrictions which no longer allow me to play an instrument in the band my wife and I started 25 years ago. Instead of "guitarist", I'm now "producer". I add backing production elements, intros, and such while engineering sound and lighting AND providing backing vocal. But--the music theater in me pulls me out to do some dramatic lead vocals too.
I continue to offer occasional design consultation on studios and live music venues. I function as a full studio for tracking/mixing/mastering solo projects, demos and voice overs to large bands. I've engineered & mixed an entire university percussion department. I've done live sound for Vixen, live broadcast mixes for Dokken, Weezer and Dream Theater.
I have really been into sound and sample creation lately. Brand new sounds/noises that have never been recorded to any media. I tend to pick apart production values in TV commercials...been working on a cool reality show idea. That kinda stuff...
Good with animals...
