My Voice Experience

For Rob, it all really started as a boy, he was always talking into a tape recorder and finding it fascinating hearing himself back. Soon, he had built a small studio at home and would record and listen back to himself comparing him with the professionals on the radio. This ability for self-criticism has been useful in developing his skills. As a teenager, he joined a pirate radio station as a presenter, that provided a wonderful backbone of experience. He then became a little more legitimate and worked for both the BBC and Independent radio in the UK. For the past 27 years, he has been a sound engineer for a top flight London studio specialising in commercials, corporate, broadcast and gaming material. He would direct voices on a daily basis and provide coaching sessions during the weekend. Naturally, this environment was a perfect opportunity to hone his own voice talents and he has recorded on many tv and radio commercials, narratives and corporate work from straight reads to character.

My Training

Rob has a degree in Business. His voice over training was done on the job, working in the studio, voicing and directing voice talent and by emulation. He believe's a person either has or hasn't a natural ability to do this kind of work. His analogy is that of an artist. You cannot really teach someone to paint, they either can or they can't. A teacher's job is to hone those skills they have. The same applies to voice work. His late father was always very keen to encourage and respect the voice and Rob has always seen the value in a good delivery. The ability to convince through attitude of voice. It is a fascinating area for him and one he is proud to be involved with. He doesn't regard it as work as he love's it so very much. He considers that the voice is an amazing and adaptable mechanism and maybe with a simple kick here and there, a change of rhythm, a change of musical tune, can change the perception of what your listener hears and indeed, the final message.

My Studio Equipment

Mackie 1620 firewire linked desk. Mackie Control Pro. Rode NT1-A and NT1000 mics. Alesis powered monitors. Technics monitors. Apple Imac. Audio and Design compressor/limiter F760X. Behringer mic pre amp. Nuendo 4.3. Adobe Audition. Audacity. Logic Audio. Roland XP50 Keyboard. He has over 100,000 sound effects at his disposal as well as access to 1000's of library tracks (although you would be responsible for the payment of this direct with the music library) He has grown up with sound engineering. Not only during his days within a commercial broadcaster but for the past 27 years as a senior sound engineer for a top flight London recording studio specialising in commercial, corporate, broadcast and gaming material. He has won numerous awards for his work on various radio and tv campaigns He is also a respected voice coach.

Additional Skills

Rob's experience has put him in very good stead with understanding what is required out of a voice over performance. He is confident in his ability and feels he can produce exactly what you are seeking. For his sins, he is an actor as well and without doubt his ability in the voice over field certainly assists him on stage when it comes to conveying a line in the way the audience will understand.
