I was working as a security officer in an office building in downtown Atlanta in the late 80's. I routinely had to use my verbal skills to direct employees, contractors and visitors. Far more frequently than desired, I had to defuse confrontational situations verbally. There was a radio station in the building and one day the owner was leaving the building. It was a weekend and he had brought his 9 year old son with him. As they got off the elevator leaving that evening, the owner was standing in the lobby talking on his phone while his son came over to the security desk and started playing with the action figures he had with him. He handed me one and I began speaking like some sort of galactic villain. He seemed to like it so I took the other figure and began an exchange using several different voices. I had no idea the owner had finished his phone conversation and was watching me. He asked me if I had ever considered working in radio and ask me to come and see him in his office Monday morning. That Monday morning during the morning show I did a 3 to 4 minute segment as the character Popeye. The program director offered me a job about a week later doing voice work and working the board part time on weekends. I eventually got up to 32 hours a week as a part time employee and work there for almost 10 years. In that time with a full studio at my disposal I did freelance voice work as well.
