My VO career began not by grabbing for cash, but by trying to give to others. My first experience was with an organization called the Connecticut Radio Information System or "CRIS." CRIS provides radio programming for blind and print handicapped people who want the news, but can't read papers or periodicals. I volunteered to record programming and, even now, host a morning radio show called "Front Pages" where I read the key articles from the NY Times and Hartford Courant to the audience. It's a great service for those who need it. Along the way, it's taught me the studio environment, mic technique, inflection, voice quality, etc.
I've also found a niche in audio dramas which is sort of "back to the future." Audio dramas are what your Gram and Gramps used to sit in front of their old tube radios to listen to. I've done acting parts, narration and other reads for these. They're lots of fun and have what appears to be a growing audience.
My most recent pet project was to read portions of the congressional healthcare bill as a member of a voice actors group. 80 voice talents combined to voice the entire 1,000+ pages of the bill and make it available at hearthebill website. Check it out. It's one way to hear- not read- all the information that might end up as our healthcare reform program. It's unbiased, truly non-partisan and a great service.
