I'm a regular on the radio here in Cape Town, and I've done good TV voice-overs too (see my AV page at Musicarta, listed under sites, and at bob-chappell-vo.com).
I was head-hunted as a character model in my late 40s. I saw a voice artist training course advertised a little later and went for it. The whole thing just snowballed - I recently appeared in Eye In The Sky with Hellen Mirren!
Formal education (in order of appearance): UK grammar school 'O' and 'A' levels (French, Latin, Economics); BA Hons (Econ. & Soc. Sciences), University of Manchester; Member of Society of Alexander Teachers (MSTAT); HGV licence; International House (London) TEFL qualification; Editing and Proofreading (McGillivray/Linnegar Associates, Cape Town).
Rode NT1 and a desk-top. The IVR, Car Care Council and Sherlock Holmes audiobook samples in my portfolio are home-recorded.
I'm a qualified editor - see my site www.thewordsmith.co.za for details. (Also available for copy proofreading.)
This means - at your invitation - I'll speak up if I think you're about to record something unidiomatic - but if you tell me to just get on with, that's exactly what I'll do!
