Hello,
I am Bill Shelton, a voice talent residing in Charleston, SC.
My greatest traits are spontaneity, sincerity, and variety of expressions based on the tempo of the music or the situation at hand. I can provide the voice that may cause someone to make a change in their lives, make an important decision, or even mend a broken heart.
Since the age of 6 I became interested in broadcasting, especially radio. I was fascinated by the fact I could sit in my bedroom at night (in the dark after everyone else was asleep) and listen to radio stations as far away as New Orleans, Fort Wayne, Chicago, New York, Charlotte, and Wheeling, WV. Now that was REAL RADIO! My dream was to get behind a microphone even if I had to start as a janitor in a station. When you want something badly enough, it can be achieved.
It was 1974 and I remember the day I traveled to Savannah, GA to the regional FCC office to take my Third Class Radio Operator's License (With a Broadcast Endorsement). I waited impatiently for the mail to arrive with that "ticket."
I then banged on doors and made cold calls to radio stations in the Charleston, SC market. At that point in my life I was in the US Navy and on shore duty so "moonlighting," as it was referred to in military jargon, allowed me to pursue night time work. I got the "big break" via the studios of WQSN, AM1450 a small but very popular station with a Country format. Now you have to realize that when I said small, I meant small! We delivered a whopping 1000 watts daytime and 250 Watts night time. They needed someone to work weekends to run the board for the "canned" shows on Saturday and Sunday.
I learned the ropes on the 12 to 6 AM shift with a young man with the air name of "Hal Weaver." After a couple of weeks with "Hal" I finally got to sit in the "air chair." Didn't talk for about another week or two. I was on my way. There were some talented folks in the Charleston Television and Radio markets. I learned all I could and took on every assignment that was offered. I won an advertising contest at the station for the best produced radio spot. I wrote the copy, produced the spot and turned it over to the sales department to sell to the prospective client that I selected. It was for a new apartment complex and it sold in morning and afternoon drive time. Got a free meal for me and my date. That was after 12 months in the business. I forgot to mention that "Hal" joined the US Air Force and I got the mid to 6 AM shift.
Personnel changes soon landed me the 7 to Midnight show. Just imagine...my own radio show.
We had really good ratings across a wide demographic. Unfortunately the station decided to go automated and I was not cut from that mold. I soon landed a spot at WEZL-FM, Charleston's only country FM Station at the time. I worked there a year and a half and pulled the 7 to 12 PM shift before the Navy transferred me to Hawaii.
I was out of radio until 1987 when I was fortunate enough to return to Charleston. My old Program Director at 'EZL, Charlie "Bird" Lindsey needed a part timer for the weekends. I was back at home!
Life and work have taken me many places. After the Navy I ended up working in a technical field which afforded me a 2 year stint in Scotland. I have traveled much of Europe and have an understanding of the world we live in. I retired from Lockheed Martin in 2011.
I'm at a point in my life where I can devote my time doing what I love, being behind a microphone.
I am back in Charleston for the fourth and final time I hope! (When I leave this time it will be in an URN!). I have a home studio with a Shure SM7B mike, an ART Microphone pre-amp and a MacBook Pro with Adobe Audition. I also do post-production and enjoy it! So..If you need it done quickly and professionally, I am here to provide you with quality service. I am very easy to work with and want you to be satisfied!
Best wishes for success in whatever you do!
Bill
