I got my first paying gig as a voice over talent in the mid '70's with no training whatsoever - besides mimicking everything I'd ever heard on radio and television.
I did a fair amount of work around my home town back then, but finally had to change directions in order to eat. Non union work was very rare in those days, and the union was very expensive.
Over the last three years I've been asked to voice numerous commercials in my local market, and have attained a three year on-going position as the radio voice of the area's premier health care provider. I have also voiced hunting and fishing shows for a local production company which air on the Outdoor Channel and the VS channel, as well as a host of other clients.
The absolute truth is that I was simply born with what would become this huge set of pipes, and I mimicked, impersonated, and copied my way to the pinnacle of mediocrity that I enjoy today.
My Aunt, who was a Wagnerian Soprano in the Metropolitan Opera became a voice coach to me after her retirement. She always stressed articulation, elocution and intonation. She said that "A great voice comes not from the diaphragm, but from the... [a region not far below it]"... In reality, she actually named the organs in question - a hoot of an 80+ year old Woman!
I have both an AKG Perception 200 condenser mic, and a customized Nady RSM 5 Ribbon mic for variety in timbre and response – (thanks Rick!) Both are phantom powered, and both interface with my computer through an M-Audio fast track pro, and a Behringer XENYX 802 EQ, pre-amp, and mixer. I use Nady headphones, and for reference speakers I have a pair of Mackie HR824 studio monitors.
I have two computers. One for e-mail, general surfing, Photo processing - (see my other site) - and the other designated for sound recording, editing, and mixing, only. This machine has an Intel Pentium 4 processor, 2 gigs of RAM and somewhere around 900 gigs of hard drive space. The recording program I use works almost exactly like Pro Tools. In other words it sounds great, has a lot of similar options and plug-ins, but it didn’t stop me from buying my Wife a new car. Of course, I never did buy my wife that new car, but that’s a different story altogether.
Though my dead booth is of the “home made” variety, remember - (see my other site again) - I am also a professional guitar builder, so this ain’t some fifth grader’s attempt at a tree house.
It’s actually a 6’ diameter, semi-hemispherical, “amphitheater” type of arrangement, lined with 2” deep cross-hatched acoustical foam.
Complete phase cancellation of harmonics as well as internal, and external, noise.
As the above, (hopefully), suggests, I posses a modicum of writing skills and have been known to help with troublesome scripts from time to time. Proper grammar is a sticking point with me, unless the script calls for something purposefully improper.
I make my primary living in another industry these days - Lutherie, and I find that helps my patient and controlled approach to the field of voiceover acting.
