My Voice Experience
I began doing voice acting on the suggestion of Pat Fraley, who was in LA beginning HIS very successful career with animation voice work.
My first paying job was as the voice of Charlie McCarthy for Great Northern Annuity Bank! The spot was a re-creation of an old time radio show.
Once word got out I could do impersonations the doors opened. Soon I was doing the likes of Andy Rooney, Clint Eastwood and Popeye for clients like McDonalds and US West.
I actually met Tom Brokaw when he came to the broadcast facility I worked for. My job was to record his promo's for KING TV and Radio. Mr. Brokaw was very professional, but it became very obvious he was lax in his pronounciation of certain words. I learned to imitate him by listening to those tapes.
Partial client list includes Microsoft, McDonalds, Nintendo, Humongous, Sierra, Boeing, Safeco, US West, Weyerhaeuser, Egghead Computer, TM Century, Westwood One, WPLJ-FM New York, KZLA-FM Los Angeles...
My Training
On the job training. I had a large radio background but was told, "They don't want announcers...they want voice actors."
I enrolled in several acting classes but found the most joy in improv through the instruction of Gary Austin, founder of The Groundlings in Los Angeles. Improv has proven very beneficial to not only voice acting but everyday life as well!
I write and produce custom comedy for radio as well. The Production Funnies began in 1991, creating custom show openers and bits for Scott Shannon, Charlie Van Dyke and Mancow. Lesser known but equally talented professionals round out the list in the United States and Canada.
Currently producing radio commercials for an advertising/marketing firm in the Pacific Northwest.
