Additional vocal abilities
All British accents.... the Royal Family to Monty Python… and “for something completely different,” Cornwall and Devon, were the Pirates came from… not the baseball team. To the northern counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire and every thing in between including the Dickensian characters of London. Scotland's Highlands and Lowlands, the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Billy Connelly, who some think is actually a small village. Ireland both North and South , Frank McCourt and Colin Farrell. (I charge extra for the swear words.) Continental Europe, the Middle East, India and Australia. Most of my impersonations are dead (which might be a good thing.) Paul Lynde, Walter Cronkite, Alfred Hitchcock, Sir Winston Churchill, Sir David Attenborough (not dead), Prince Phillip (just looks dead). Then there are the character voices…Kings, Queens (both kinds), monsters, villains and thugs, including inanimate objects for Video Games, Cartoons, Animation Series and Commercials., details in the next section
Experience, training, and equipment
And now a conversation between a soft boiled egg and a scrambled egg…. I was about 10 years old, when I first talked like an egg, much to the delight of my mother, who being asthmatic, would laugh so hard she’d wheeze and then go into breathless convulsions, grabbing for her inhaler. These memorable moments with my parents and younger brother usually occurred at the dinner table, where I had a captive audience…. and no TV to compete with…. it was Belfast, Northern Ireland in the early Fifties. Fast forward 12 years…. I’ve immigrated to Canada and need a job. Walking into a small market Radio Station I ask if they’re hiring. The Manager says, ”what would you like to do ?” “ I’d like to be on-air.” “ Hmmm, what kind of accent is that.” “ Irish,” says I. “I don’t know if people could understand you.” “ Well, I can talk like a Canadian, eh.” I do….. and he gives me a job. For the next 25 years I worked in Radio and Television. I did it all, Rock Jock to News… Childrens Shows, Cooking Shows, the weather. From 1975-77 I hosted a variety show with Grammy Award winner Walter Ostenek, Canada’s Polka King. From ’86 to ’98 I travelled the world as host of “Discover Your World” a TV travel show, all the while doing my freelance voice work. Some of that freelance included the iconic Children’s series,“Mighty Machines” Treehouse TV. Corus Entertainment . YTV . as the voice of everything from a Bulldozer to a Jumbo Jet. Soon to be released, “Super Hero” animation series “The 99” produced by Endemol in the U.K. playing Zoran principle role, plus a slew of extras. “Party Boat” video game, release this Spring, principle, playing the psychotic First Mate plus a dozen other characters. Commercials include… Radio and TV spots(currently running in U.S. and U.K.) for Universal Orando Resort “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter”, also (current U.S.) Little Caesars. Some previous clients… McDonald’s, New York Fries, Labatt’s Beer, Hyundai, Royal Bank, CIBC Bank, Bell Telephone. Miscellaneous… Inflight videos for BWIA. Safety training videos for the mining industry etc.
My formal education was acquired in the U.K. I attended Art School in Belfast and had done some theatre in England, prior to immigrating to Canada. Two choices, I could be a starving artist or a starving actor. Because I really like food I chose radio with it’s meager starting salary and soon discovered performing on-air and reading commercials etc. fed the actor in me. Chronologically speaking ones education never stops depending on your curiousity. I’ve worked as a YMCA camp councilor, taught broadcasting at Niagara College, raised St. Bernard dogs and four children, worked for the Humane Society, built a really nice shed and numerous fences plus all the cooking and grocery shopping. Favourite things…. Cooking, gardening (a lot), antiques, drawing and painting, restoring old vehicles ( a 1960 Mercedes Benz 190 SL and currently a 1965 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser) For 12 years I’ve traveled the world and we’re not talking luxury cruises and high end resorts…. do I have stories. I know I should write a book. Maybe that’s next, after I finish the movie I started in ’91… it’s almost there.
