My Voice Experience

Known as "Hawaii's Man of a Thousand Voices", Bill Sage has been a voice talent professional for over thirty years. He was the comedy writer for the world's highest paid disc jockey, Hal "J. Akuhead Pupule" Lewis at KSSK from 1980 to 1983, and has voiced over 100,000 commercials, bits, promos, and station ID's for virtually every radio and TV station in Hawaii since 1975. He's also performed in over 1500 shows in Hawaii since 1985 as a stand up comic, impressionist, and emcee, and is a four time Pele Award winner for excellence in advertising, radio division, and is one of Hawaii's most sought after ad copy and comedy writers. Bill's been the President of the Sage Corporation since 1983. One guy with over a thousand employees, all of whom live in his larynx. Bill is also a composer and lyricist, and is the chief writer for the Hawaii Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalist's annual Gridiron Show. Parody lyrics which fall exactly on the beat and rhyme perfectly are a wicked specialty of his. With the advent of ISDN, computers and email, Bill can be wherever you want him to be in a hurry. And since Hawaii's six hours earlier than New York and three hours earlier than LA, you don't have to get up early to use his services. He's already up, and the Kona coffee is fine. He'll email you a cup during the session.

My Training

Bill started imitating birds, airplanes, toilets, geckoes and people as a little baby, and hasn't stopped since. His parents nicknamed him "Gerald McBoingboing" afer the popular cartoon kid of the 1950's who did pretty much the same thing. Bill remembers getting started with voice impressions as a freshman at Punahou School in Honolulu back in 1961 when Vaughan Meader came out with the classic comedy album about JFK & friends, "The First Family." By the time Bill graduated in 1964, he had at least a dozen impressions under his belt, and when he graduated from Lewis & Clark College in Portland Oregon with a BS [how apropos] in English, he'd been doing deejay work at the college station for several years. Being an English major, this assured him of a fine career as a waiter at the original Old Spaghetti Factory in Portland, and as a grocery clerk at Get 'n Go Food Stores. [Seven-Elevens hadn't been thunk up yet.] Bill noticed he could get better tips if he could think up bits to amuse his customers at the restaurant, and lessen the scowls from the winos in the overnight shift at the convenience store when they came in to buy Sterno for a quick 38 cent pick-me-up. Taking these lessons to heart, he moved back to Hawaii in January of 1971, where he said "Dad. I dunno what to do with my life!" His
Dad said "Well, you talk a lot, whyn'tcha go into broadcasting?"
Bill said "How do I do that?" His Dad said "Beats me. I've already paid your tuition. Here's a dime. There's a phone. Good luck." He found himself managing AFRTS station WXLE on Canton lsland for 300 men and no women as of 11 April 1971, in Graduate School at the University of Montana in Missoula in September of 1972, a deejay at KGMY Missoula in March of 1973, then KGVO Missoula, then KGU Honolulu, KORL Honolulu, KSSK Honolulu, KKUA Honolulu, and in 1983 at the helm of his own company, The Sage Corporation doing V/O's and writing copy for a living for hundreds of different clients and stations. He hasn't had the
nerve to fire himself yet, and none of his thousand employees have come up with a way to tell him that he's the only guy in the company, which suits him and his clients just fine.

My Studio Equipment

Have a Blue Snowball mic and iMac with WireTap Pro for mp3 and mp4 voice only dubs. Will use Audio Media and other pro studios with ISDN for live studio sessions.

Additional Skills

He's also voiced the lead in 13 episodes of "Timberwood Tales" from LA Animation, and had principal V/O's in LA Animation's full length Cartoon "The Mighty Kong" and released two comedy albums "Honk If You Love George" and "Sterling Silva: Ace Private Defective", has been active in the Honolulu Rotary Club, The Board of Trustees for the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, and numerous other pro bono recorded PSAs and live appearances for charities and community fundraisers in Honolulu including Hospice Hawaii, The Make A Wish Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu Law Enforcement Relays, Honolulu Symphony Fun Run and Protect Kaho'olawe Ohana. Bill hosted the weekly public affairs program "Science Hawaii" from 1980 to 1989 on KTUH, KORL, KSSK, KQMQ, and KKUA. He has been a Lay Reader and Chalice Bearer for Saint Andrews Cathedral since 1989, and
paddles for Hui Nalu Canoe Club. His hobbies include too much coffee, not enough sleep, and making faces at himself in the mirror when he's not looking. He has brown hair, wavy eyes, and
is tall for his height. Parts of Bill have already healed completely.
Some assembly required. Your mileage may vary. If rash persists, see your doctor. Disclaimers not included.
