I've been a volunteer audiobook narrator for Learning Ally (produce materials for children with learning disabilities) for several years and am branching out into other VO work.
I have one credit on Audible for an independent horror author (Resurrection Man, by Franklin E. Wales). He asked for a short VO to accompany a video trailer he was planning, and the ad copy sounded like one of those 1990's movie trailers. I volunteered to make him a video trailer for free, put on my best Don LeFontaine impersonation, and edited in a music bed; it was great fun! (https://youtu.be/GmLUvx09HUY)
Microphones:
• Shure KSM44a (Bright and open, good for commercial work to cut through a music bed. Vanishingly-low self-noise. This is a brutally honest microphone that takes no prisoners!)
• Roswell Pro Audio Mini-K87 HO (Neutral voicing with rich midrange and smooth high-end, great for long-form narration. This model was customized at the factory with a high-output circuit that reduces self-noise at the expense of high-SPL. This is an amazing-sounding microphone and I find myself turning to it more and more!)
Preamps/Interfaces:
• Universal Audio Volt 176 (Excellent low-noise preamps)
• Solid State Logic SSL2+ (It's an SSL. 'nuff said!)
Software:
• Logic Pro (primary DAW for recording, mixing, processing, and mastering)
• iZotope RX 11 Standard (Audio repair toolkit)
• iZotope Ozone 11 Advanced (Audio Mastering toolset)
• Final Cut Pro / Motion (For video work as needed)
