Theodore Schwartz

Variety of Characters, Offbeat, Broadcast

Voice Description

I can make my voice sound professional and smooth for presentations, narrations, and broadcast-type materials. I am also able to perform hyper, cartoony, characters. I've had less experience in narration and literary-type interpretation, but am confident in my ability to adapt to that format in the future.

I speak naturally with a slight Wisconsinite accent, which I can either keep casually or streamline. I can easily speak in alto, baritone, and am working on smoothing out on bass - my singing abilities are currently quite lackluster, but that's where my vocal range is.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

I can do passable impersonations of comedians Eddie Izzard and Dylan Moran, though I generally go off of their intonations and accents (I can't currently produce a realistic Irish or British accent).

My Voice Experience

The bulk of my experience is in competitive public speaking in the categories of Policy Debate, for-entertainment-only Student Congress speeches, informative, and persuasive speeches. I have three award-winning original speeches which have included a persuasive speech about tort reform, a eulogy on singer Tiny Tim (with an introduction from his hit "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" - though, my voice has deepened considerably since then), and a demonstration speech on men's fashion. More recently I've done on-the-street safer sex demonstrations (male condoms, female condoms, dental dams) and entertaining/sexy skits largely aimed at gay male and transgender audiences.

My Training

My main education in speaking was through competitive public speech in high school (Brookfield East High School, the current Wisconsin Forensic Coaches Association State Tournament's winning school). Prior to studying under Coach Mary Wacker there, I had been an alto in my middle and elementary school's choir. In high school, I also had classes in Public Speaking with the school's acting director and Radio&TV (which had a heavy emphasis on different types of radio speaking) with the school's newspaper head.

I've also taken courses in Journalism (BEHS), Fiction Writing (Columbia College Chicago), and Advertising Culture and the Media (Columbia College Chicago).

My Studio Equipment

I do not have my own studio equipment currently. A close friend of mine has her bachelor's in Radio Broadcasting from Marquette University, and especially after 2009 ends, she will be looking for additional work.

Additional Skills

I have an extensive background in writing original works of various sorts, including the previously mentioned original works in competitive public speaking as well as a feature article in my high school's newspaper (at the personal request of the editor), a workshop short story that was recommended to the head of Northwestern University's Creative Writing department, as well as a short story from my Fiction Writing I class being submitted to Hair Trigger (Columbia College Chicago's award-winning student compilation). I've also written copy for grant applications and the Alcohol & Other Drugs policy for non-profit organization Diverse & Resilient. I am still good friends with my high school speech coach as well as the people at Diverse & Resilient.
