Sara Mendes Da Costa

Voice Description

I have a warm and soothing voice with a good element of trust and openness. A voice of authority...but approachable.

For my straight reads, you'll find me on BBC documentaries which require a good, believable, received pronunciation voice. I work a lot in the corporate sphere and am very comfortable with a professional, authoritative projects. I do, when I can, like to add an friendly and approachable element to the voice as it's key that the audience is happy to listen and feel connected.

I work internationally and am probably best known as the voice of the UK Speaking Clock, hosted by BT. This brings an element of fame to it so I'm often on the radio or television. I've been told I'm the equivalent to the US Pat Fleet.

Straight reads aside, I have a great range of characters and a very wide range, and will create characters to order. I can turn my hand to lots of UK and European accents and can mimic too.

I feel the key with my voice is a good warm, honest voice with bags of scope for flexibility. It's often said 'I can't believe all these voices come from the same person'...which is great!...and if it's a good, well-known, British RP voice...please contact me; I'd love to help.

My Training

I've mainly gained my voiceover skills through loads of experience. Being linked via isdn and doing masses of commercials has really helped stretch me and hone my skills. I play around in my studio recording different things that challenge me. I'm usually heard having fun with different sounds/accents etc round the house and have created loads of characters simply by playing. I did undertake a day's voiceover training course about ten years ago...but what I came out with then, and what I now have...are world's apart (in a good way!)

Having had 20 years experience in the telemarketing industry too, I've learned a lot about using my voice and encouraging the listener to stay with me and trust me.

I am trained to Master Practioner level in NLP which has me a huge insight & knowledge of voice communication and I actually realised I was doing a lot of it naturally. Whilst I have learned what to do and how to do it, voice wise,in many respects, I do feel strongly that honesty, integrity, openness and trust, are paramount.

My Studio Equipment

I have my own isdn linked studio. Equipment/Software: Audio TX isdn system, Adobe Audition software, AT4033asm studio capacitor microphone with shockmount, BEY DT100-100-400ohm Headphones and

Additional Skills

The most important thing to me during a project is to do the very best I can to deliver the perfect voiceover for my clients. I'm very professional and loyal and will do what it takes to get the job done to the client's requirements. If, at the same time, there's scope for having fun during the project/campaign...then that's an added bonus!

I am versatile and will turn my hand to most things and will also be honest if something's not within my remit. There are plenty of others who can do what I can't...but I believe I have a great range, a keen understanding of what's needed and am completely happy to be directed when needed.

As far as voicing is concerned, I am a good all rounder. As a rule I do tend to be used a lot for straight/informative/trustworthy and warm/inviting reads.
In the UK we have Marks & Spencers/M&S ads with a very well known, sultry, sexy, female voice. I am frequently asked to mimic this. Joanna Lumley style comes up a lot, if they want someone professional and 'grownup' I often get chosen for warmth and a trustworthy approachable voice of authority. When people realise what I can actually do with my voice and the range I have they more and more often ask me to go outside the box, which is great.

I really enjoy creating a project from scratch so having an idea, writing, sourcing other skills if necessary, voicing and putting things together, so that I have a finished project, is great for me. If I work with producers and directors, and if it's warranted/required, I love to get more involved than purely just the voice side and can be asked to edit and reword/write ads and offer suggestions for direction on the style. Having said that, I am also more than happy to put the icing on the cake and professionally voice a project that a producer has lovingly created.

I'd love to work with you.
