P.J. Stoppleworth

Serious, intimate, weathered, tough

Voice Description

My narration work has been described as hyper-real, rugged, straightforward, blue-collar, and honest. Throw in just a touch of country and we're talking rustic and rural too. I have a large portfolio of hard sell radio & TV commercials along with a good selection of spots that are quiet & classy, natural & conversational, or quirky & humorous. Put on the announcer hat and I deliver clear and listenable pieces for use either in presentations or as the VOG for live events. Character work includes all sorts of different voices for video games, film, music videos, animation, and commercials.

My Voice Experience

Starting with a commercial for a bowling alley in 1987, voiceover work has been the one constant through careers in radio, hospitality, marketing, advertising, media production, event promotion and management, restaurant ownership, and all sorts of live performance gigs. In 2003, I finally bit the bullet, went full-time freelance, and haven't looked back. My client list includes work for everybody from the bluest of blue chip multinational corporations and dense technical & educational modules to small town used car dealers. While my portfolio has lots of high-energy event-oriented pieces (and I can still spin up the excitement level to 11) my favorite work these days is narration, with reads that reflect quiet strength and weathered wisdom.

Additional Skills

In my time spent as an event promoter & planner, I've found what works well for ads and event announcements to build audiences and create bigger experiences. I also had several harsh lessons in what doesn't work and how to use every second effectively when the time crunch hits. (The biggest lesson is avoiding the time crunch situation altogether, but sometimes... well, stuff happens.)

My various live gigs (as DJ, comedy MC, live event VOG) has shown me how to read crowds and tailor a presentation for the best response.

Working in advertising and then media production taught me what is probably happening when I work with a producer or agency rep and how they can be dealing with the many difficulties of a tough client. This also showed me how the typical production process works, from concept to distributing the final master, and how I as a voice artist can be of best service at any given phase.

And my time working in hospitality taught me how to both deliver outstanding customer service and how to make it right when things don't go well.
