Philip Gartrell

Multiple Characters, energetic, powerful, flexible

Voice Description

There are three things that set my voice apart from most. POWER, CONTROL, and FLEXIBILITY. I have been an entertainer since I can remember, however I have been getting paid as a professional for 11 years. I can go from a deep, slow, soothing baritone for narration, to an extreme, energetic motivator, and everything in between.

My Voice Experience

I got my first taste of the world of voiceover production in the Vocal Production . We we're given a script that included dialogue, as well as cues for music, sound effects, and specific production effect techniques, such as delay throws, stutter effects, time compression and expansion (slow down and speed up with minimal quality loss), and pitch shifting. I dove head first into the project, and immediately became enamored with the entire process. I've haven't had that much fun in a long time! Incidentally, upon hearing my finished product, the course director Ed Tinley (who was R Kelly's vocal producer and a voice over artist/producer for many years) told me I should put together an audition reel and look into doing voice over work. Given my new found infatuation, I chose to follow his advice, and begin a new adventure.

My Training

As a teenager, I went to Harrison Center for the Performing Arts in Lakeland, FL as trumpet player. At 18, I enlisted in the Marine Corp and served as a musician/singer/entertainer for 4 years. I also wrote narrative scripts, news broadcasts, and arranged music for the Marine Band. After being Honorably Discharged, I began my training, and entered the dueling piano industry. It was here where I got to refine my public speaking and improvisational skills. There's something about doing a 6 hour, all-request live piano show that teaches you to think on your feet!! I have travelled to over 15 countries, over twenty states, and 5 of the seven continents (I have South America and Australia left) as an entertainer. I sing and play piano, guitar, bass, drums, and trumpet. Currently, I reside in Orlando, where I am enrolled in the Recording Arts Bachelor Program at Full Sail University. I will graduate in December of 2014 with at least a 3.7 GPA, and the Pro Tools 200 series certification. My education combined with my experience as an artist, and discipline as a US Marine, qualifies me to build any project from scratch, and produce a professional quality, fully mastered production for anyone's needs.
