Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects
I do a funny 10-year-old boy character named Hue, for offbeat phone messages or gags. He began as a joke, but people seemed to get a laugh out of him, so I wound up recording many custom answering machine messages the last few years.
My Voice Experience
I began VO work in 1979 in Tucson, Arizona for a small ad agency where I learned different styles of delivery for different types of commercials.
Later, as Production Director for a small-market station in Southern California, I worked with the sales staff both copy-writing and coaching VO style and delivery. I also integrated voices from Canada and Los Angeles in our local commercials (by email), while writing and voicing some of my own.
Originally I entered broadcasting in 1975 on a beautiful music station where I learned to speak in a low, smooth voice, edit 1/4 tape and read copy.
In 2000, when working as the Production Director for KDAR Radio in Oxnard, I decided to study with a VO teacher in Westlake Village. He helped me develop a more conversational, less announcer-ish style. His instruction changed the way I looked at copy and delivery. Needless to say, I passed these lessons along to my staff.
In 2003, while working at HisChannel.com in the early days, I had the opportunity to co-host (and often engineer) a weekly live call-in program which gave me yet another way to use my voice to influence people and share my thoughts in an unscripted, spontaneous way. This too gave me the ability to add (when necessary) a live and spontaneous feel to the delivery.
