My Voice Experience

The human voice is the most expressive of all instruments. Some use it for basic communication. I use mine to become other people. Some of them get ideas across in an easily-understood way. Some of them are funny, some are serious, some warm, some in-your-face. Some relate news or warn of danger. Some are fatherly, some are story-tellers.

I've written and recorded my own and others' work since 1981. I've been funny, informative, forceful, persuasive, austere. My work includes commercials, corporate presentations, messages-on-hold, everything from radio for Billy Graham to driving tours in Civil War country. I caught the voice bug a long time before that, buying a small tape recorder and becoming other people into it when I was twelve.

I can get what you want across to your audience in a convincing, easy-to-listen to manner that stands out precisely because I do not sound like an announcer. People tell me I have an intimate character to my voice and delivery, an intuitive understanding of how things should be spoken. You can rest assured I won't waste your time.

My Training

I flunked a Creative Writing course at Madison College, now James Madison University. Well, Einstein didn't speak until he was four and didn't read until age seven.

I began writing for radio in 1973 as a station Program Director, doing commercials and editorials.

In 1981 I was taught the psychology of persuasion by a brand manager at Dancer Fitzgerald Sample, who wrote "Where's the Beef," Toyota's original Oh What a Feeling campaign, and who wrote Peter-Paul's "Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut" brand ID / jingle.

I've spent hundreds of hours keeping up with new developments in this business and have attended Dan O'Day's International Radio and Creative Production Summits. My work is represented in one of Dan's teaching materials and was told "This is the voice I'm missing in American radio today" by Dick Orkin, one of America's best-loved voice over stars, concerning my style in performing commercials.

My Studio Equipment

I use a $2200 world-class Lawson L-47 MP II tube condenser microphone and Peter Montessi's superb A Designs P1 microphone preamplifier, a combination that is at once up front yet smooth and intimate. I continue to use a warm-sounding analog console into digital editing gear.

Additional Skills

I read to my kids throughout their childhood and am an excellent story- and joke-teller. What I'm trying t'tell you is that taking the heartbeat of what you want to communicate is my stock-in-trade. I push myself to do the very best I'm able. When I finish a product, I don't look at it as if to say "Look what I did." A piece is good or not-so-good regardless of who did it. This attitude frees me to work in a constant learning and refining mode. So whether I'm writing for you, voicing for you, editing for you, or getting coffee for you, you get the best I can do.
