Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects
Accents/dialects: American English (Southern, New England, Southwest, NYC/Philly, Chicago/North Central, Northwest New York, Mid-west), British English (Received Pronunciation/Queen's English, Cockney, Manchester, Estuary English), Irish, Scottish, Mexican, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Eastern European/Russian, Australian English. There are probably others, but you get the idea...
Impersonations/characterizations: Although never done professionally, I have been known to mimic scores of people. I can also do many cartoon-y voices. I have a knack for hearing a voice and being able to match its accent, pitch, timbre and cadence - and reproducing it - often times without having to work on it. You just hafta ask!
My Voice Experience
If I had a dime for every person who has remarked, "WOW. You have an AMAZING voice!", I'd have about a buck-thirty. Really, though, I have worked in the live-event industry for about 15 years, and I can't begin to count how many times I have had clients turn to me and ask me to be their VOG announcer upon hearing me speak. I guess what I'm saying is that I've never catalogued my prior 'jobs', since many of them weren't paying ones. But I have done VO work for a number of videos on an internal web-based newsletter for the NCAA. I also provided the narration for the Lifetime Achievement Award video presented at the 2010 CEDIA Expo. I recently provided live VOG for an all-staff meeting for the NCAA, introducing special guests and interacting with the president of the organization.
I am a graduate of Indiana University, where I studied Telecommunications and Theater. I was also a Vocal Performance major for two years before I made the move from Music to T-Com. So between my theater and music studies, I've taken many classes and attended workshops which have taught me to properly use and care for my voice. I also have a classically-trained singing voice. Additionally, I've worked almost 15 years in the live event industry and understand how the dynamic of an effective voice-over artist can make or break a project.
My Studio Equipment
I have a small recording rig in my house. I use an MXL 990 USB Cardioid Condenser Microphone with a 6" Nady Pop Filter. I record straight to my laptop using Audacity 1.3 Recording/Editing Software with the BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer Plug-in. I also use Audacity 1.3 for all necessary editing.
As stated before, I've worked in the live event industry for the past 15 years, and I've been involved in music and theater for most of my life. So not only do I understand the importance of vocal quality --- I can also understand the importance of recording levels and sound quality for your final project. I have lived in four different regions of the United States - the South, the Northeast, the West and the Midwest - so I have learned to pick up on the different nuances of the local dialects and assimilate appropriately. I believe this has been key to my being able to mimic accents, and to being able to turn them on and off when I need to. Silly though it may sound, I also watched a lot of British comedy growing up, which helped me create the many different British dialects that I can perform. And although I don't necessarily speak fluent Spanish, I can READ it fluently, if that makes sense. Oh yes, AND I CAN SING!
