My Voice Experience
I've ways been the life of the party, telling stories dramatically, doing impersonations of people, characters, creatures, or creating my own characters or creatures vocally. I'm a singer and amateur stage actor, and the dramatic and especially overly-dramatic characters always come easily to me.
My inspiration to become a voice actor was born in Waypoint Theater Company, a local, Southern Arizona non-profit professional drama/musical theater troupe, in which we put on a live "radio-play" playing a "voice actor" whose job it was to play George Bailey in Its a Wonderful Life, all in a "live-studio audience, set in a 1940s studio.
The multiple voices and challenge of characterization seemed amazing, and it was all I could do to try and not steal other parts as well, like Mr. Potter...the villain's voice of corruption and cruelty. From the beginning of rehearsals, it quickly became second nature to voice my character and help others find their characterization styles more quickly.
I've always had a good ear to pick out differences in voicing and timbre, as well as movie music, dynamics, and generally seem (at least to myself) to know what sounds right and where. Ive always liked a wide music range, and believe in the power of orchestration; but underlying everything in a performance is the characterization of those roles which people come to love (or love to hate). Trueness to the role and vision of the creator/director is key, and flexibility is crucial. I also have a talent for changing focus rapidly, so if asked, I could probably voice 3 parts in conversation with each other.
I have performed since high school, whether acting or singing, or generally being a dramatic goofball. Throughout my life I have been loud, very vocal and do not shy away from vocally challenging activities. Learning accents, songs, lines from movies and TV is all second nature to me.
In military college (New Mexico Military Institute) I took all 4 semesters of concert choir and vocal ensemble, and was the president of both, and part of my responsibility was selecting songs for the season, deciding which was appropriate and for which occasion. I was selected to sing a solo for the baccalaureate gala at commencement my second year.
Because of my singing career, I have very good breath support and vocal control. Consistency in characterization comes naturally to me.
I have taken voice training (for singing) with several different teachers, but the same techniques apply to voice-over work as well, ie breath support, resonating, the zygomatic arch, etc.
I am well-spoken, and always tend to speak at weddings, funerals when asked, and sometimes impromptu. I can write effective speeches, and am very good at learning lines and delivering them effectively, in tone and emphasis.
My Studio Equipment
I am an amateur audio/video editor. I edit my own home movies and have made several wedding slide shows, including video AND voice overs for friends of mine. I know how audio editing/engineering works and all the basics behind it, including acoustics and how effects are applied.
I edited and produced a audio/video stage production featuring the personal stories of two Holocaust survivors interlaced with stage performance taking place simultaneously while the videos told their stories. Timing was key and responsibility devolved upon me to guide the actors (and child actors) through the learning of timing for the several segments, and THEN taught somebody else to run the setup (my personal mac) and acted on stage while the asst director ran it live.
So in short, I was subject to my own editing, audio/visual queues, WHILE on stage with my production.
I learn new equipment readily and quickly, and although I lack professional equipment at home (though I hope to change that with a successful voice over career), I have the resources and connections required to produce a quality product.
I am a very dedicated person. Once committed, I will follow through until the project is done, and I am very loyal. I take direction well, and am prone to also assist other performers in finding their groove. I am honest, fun-loving and love people.
I love to laugh and joke, and make friends, and am a firm believer that people are what matter most, not money or a job. Making people happy and being around people is what I do.
I love to create, and if those around me love to create a beautiful thing, that's my idea of heaven on earth.
