Karl Horak

Calming, comfortable, teaching but not preaching

Voice Description

People generally tell me that when I speak that I have a measured, calm, and professional manner that puts listeners at ease.

I have narrated a short series about the adventures of a world traveling teddy bear that appeals to all ages. I have also generated instructional lectures for distance learning applications, some of which have over 45,000 views.

I have a technical background that lends me to narratives and documentaries of a scientific nature. My academic background has taught me how to pronounce scientific names and nomenclature.

My Home Base

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

Underlying accent is from Kansas, no accent at all. This allows me to range from a talking teddy bear to a German professor.

My Voice Experience

As an adjunct college professor, I have been generating podcasts for distance learning. As a member of technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories, I have been preparing and presenting highly technical oral material to international audiences, often via web. My voice is considered calming and relaxing, but not the sort that puts you to sleep.

My Training

B.S. Biology, New Mexico State University 1975
Ph.D. Ecology, University of Arizona 1981
Teaching Assistant, U of A 1975 - 1980
Adjunct Professor, College of Santa Fe 1990 - 2009
Podcasting, self-taught -- 2005 - present
Distance learning materials -- College of Santa Fe 2005 - 2009
Senior Docent, International Programs, Sandia National Laboratories 1996 - 2014

My Studio Equipment

I have a modest home studio that centers around a Dell computer with a high-end sound card and microphone. I have a portable system for field recordings. In addition, I have access to a professional sound studio when required.

Additional Skills

I have a very flexible work schedule that allows me to accommodate most requests for voice work, including short turn-around pieces.

My work experience at Sandia National Laboratories has given me familiarity with current science and engineering terminology, so that I can present complex material in a way that approaches "info-tainment", holding the listener's attention without seeming condescending.

As the Institute of Nuclear Material Management Website Subcommittee chairperson, I am involved with the many and varied technologies for delivering video and voice content over the Internet. This helps me understand the technical strengths and weaknesses of different delivery formats and systems.
