Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects
Must admit I am a little weak in this field!
But, I do perform a mean, 'Put the lotion in the basket'.
And from the same movie, I have put a freeze down a spine or two when I sneak up behind them and say, 'Are the lambs still crying...'
My Voice Experience
Starting ten plus years ago, I would pick up the phone and cold call every business that I thought could use a voice over artist. State by state, city by city, dozens or a hundred calls a week. If there was an interest, I would drive to their studio or send them an MP3.
Another technique to get my name out there was just stopping in! Radio stations, TV/Video production companies, and advertising agencies.
Before long I had acquired clients in eight states. Except for one, I would record the spot in my home studio. Most of the jobs were thirty or sixty second spots for local broadcast TV or radio.
My whole adult life I have been told that I have a great voice. Wasn't sure what I could do exactly with my voice, then I learned about voice overs. Had no idea many many years ago that you could actually make a living performing voice overs! My interest in this field developed quickly.
In the beginning I would record myself and compare it to commercials and the like that were being aired. Slowly but surely I was picking up on ways to hard sell or soft sell my voice, as well as different techniques on how to project my voice better. Some time and a lot of practicing went by and decided to make a voice over demo... Because I was going to jump right into this and be a star right?
At the time I was playing in a band and decided to ask a local producer, whom we had done work with, to help me make a voice over demo. This was the best thing I could have done! Each read he would cut me off and point out what I was doing wrong. I have a great voice, it is unique, but I was not listening to it! Letters, vowels, words were not being pronounced correctly! The producer pointed out the 'flaw', my beloved Boston accent!
More time a lot more practice and I was pronouncing those letters, vowels, and words correctly. Or as I call it, neutral! The main thing I still do is listen to other voice over artists and learn from their performance.
My Studio Equipment
In my home studio I use Cakewalk to record, and a Groove Tubes PSM1 for the microphone.
