John Drew

Personable, Convincing, Extraordinarily Flexible

Voice Description

People need a voice to tell their story, and as a full-time voice actor, that's what I do... and do well.

There are endless voices from which to choose for your project, and any number of them are likely to be perfectly suited. By the same token, no single voice actor is the right voice for every project — I'd never pretend to be "the voice" for every production.

I nevertheless bring something unique to your project — forty years as a multiple award-winning writer, producer and director for television stations, ad agencies, production companies and as an independent contractor. I've also acted in principal roles in motion pictures and in professional theatre. What does that mean for your project?

Almost invariably, I get it. And I not only know how to give direction to actors and voice talent, I know how to take direction and work with a producer-director to achieve the delivery he or she hears in her imagination.

For me, delivering an exemplary voice over, narrative or character voice is a commitment, the basis for mutually productive, long-term relationships.

Rather than extoll the virtues of my own voice, I'll let a few people with whom I've partnered tell you how they perceive my work.

"John has a way of reaching the depths of what needs to be said. His voice is fabulous but his delivery and his understanding of what he reads is even better! We've worked together on many projects and he is simply the best!" ~ Jamie DeFrates, Producer/Composer

"Whether it is high energy for sales, matter of fact for training, grand and glorious, or heartfelt and sincere, John has always been able to deliver the tone we needed in our projects ... His background as an advertising exec helps him understand the message and bring just the right inflection. I like working with pros and this one always comes through." ~ Ray Hays, President, PRC Digital Media

"The man has the 'it' voice. Sensitive, commanding, humorous, and all within 30 seconds, or longer if you want. He has it all. Whatever your needs, he can deliver." ~ Ray Brown, Senior Editor, Jordan Outdoor

"I hired John to cut narrations for a number of projects through the years. His voice is FANTASTIC!!!...He can tailor it for whatever you are looking for." ~ Tim Spain, Independent Cameraman/Editor

A truly believable voice talent capable of extraordinarily flexible delivery styles.
From casually commanding to rough and gravelly,
Warm and sensual to dry and matter-of-fact,
Erudite and sophisticated to laid back and down home,
Bright and youthful to old and wise.

I am a consummate professional voice actor with impeccable credentials, unimpeachable references and a commitment to exemplary performance.

My Training

With more than 35 years experience performing professional voice talent, I began my career as a radio announcer at age 17. I spent two years in school in England where I studied and began to imitate British accents. I adapted them so well that I was frequently asked what part of England I was from.

I studied public speaking and drama in high school and continued to study drama in college. After four years in the Navy, I traveled throughout Europe, eventually living in Paris, where I performed English-language voice talent and ADR (automated dialog replacement) for the French automaker Renault. After returning to the U.S., I worked in radio and television as a voice and on-camera talent for ten years. Later, as a film actor, corporate spokesman and television host, I studied voice and on-camera performance techniques with several nationally recognized teachers and at KVG Studios in Florida.

I am a professional member of the World-Voices Organization, an international association of voice actors whose members have been meticulously vetted as professional voice actors.

My Studio Equipment

For those interested in the technical...

Microphone: AKG C-12 Clone

My primary microphone is a meticulously handcrafted, exact replica of a 1950s AKG C-12, which is likely the most sought-after vintage tube condenser available. The microphone was built for me by the extraordinarily-talented electronics and audio engineer Lee Dyess, using the original AKG schematic with the finest components available, including 1% resistors, modern electrolytics, a NOS 6072 tube, an American-made, gold-sputtered, dual diaphragm capsule and an original AMI T14 transformer.

This beautifully-crafted C12 clone provides that old school tube condenser sound in the tradition of legendary Neumanns and Telefunkens, but with greater clarity and lower self-noise. It’s a big, warm sound but nevertheless precise and virtually flat from 17 Hz to 22 KHz with a clear and solid bottom end and a distinct high end sparkle without being sibilant.

My secondary microphone is a vintage Sennheiser MKH-416. While originally intended for use by the motion picture industry in recording voice audio on location, the MKH-416 is an extraordinary mic for up close, deep, gravely movie trailer deliveries

PrismSound Lyra II AD/DA Converter and Microphone Preamplifier

This is the weakest link in most voice talents’ recording systems… not in my mine. My microphone’s output goes directly into a PrismSound Lyra II AD/DA converter. The Lyra II uses the same converters as the legendary PrismSound Orpheus, Titan and Atlas products found in the world’s finest recording facilities. With near-identical bench-test measurements to the Orpheus, Titan and Atlas, the Lyra II is likely the absolute best two-channel recording interface on the market, capable of artifact-free resolutions as high as 24-bit/192 KHz. With a preamp section that has been compared to the legendary John Hardy, Grace and the BAE microphone preamps, the sound is totally free of coloration. In short, it’s simply perfect.

Mac Mini Server Computer and Reaper Tracking and Editing Software

My primary computer is a Mac Mini Server with two 750 GB hard drives and 8 TB of outboard storage. I’m running the latest 64-bit version of Reaper tracking and editing software with plugins by Softube, Waves and other audio software designers, although I almost never adjust EQ and only add slight compression with the Softube Tubetech CL-1B compressor. Remote control of the recording software from my voice booth is accomplished with a PreSonus Fader Port. With this setup, I’m able to record in resolutions up to 24-bit/192 KHz, although most clients prefer files of 24-bit/48 KHz.

I subscribe to Source Connect for realtime, two-way voice recording capability. My SourceConnect handle is johndrew2.

Beautifully, Custom-Crafted Isolation Booth

It doesn’t matter that a voice talent has a $5,000 microphone and a $2,500 AD/DA converter. If the acoustical environment isn’t dead silent and almost anechoic, the resulting audio recording will have coloration, room resonance and ambient sounds that degrade the audio track. My double-walled voice booth was modeled after several commercially-available isolation structures with a number of significant improvements.

The walls, floor and ceiling of my voice booth are over seven inches thick! They consist of five layers of sound reflection and absorption materials, each of differing properties. No component was left to chance — half-inch layers of tempered window glass, Roxul Safe & Sound inner wall insulation, solid core wood door with acoustic seals, sonically-isolated power and signal connections, isolated ventilation system, noiseless LED lighting, wall and ceiling-mounted microphone boom, computer monitor and video camera. No expense was spared in constructing the booth.

Located outside aviation flight paths and away from most commercial and emergency traffic in a residential neighborhood, and at nearly 600 pounds standalone weight, the booth is, as they say, “dead as a doornail.” When I record, all you hear is my voice.

Additional Skills

I've spent forty years as a writer, producer and director of award-winning radio and television commercials, corporate videos, infomercials and sound tracks, and have worked for seventeen years as an advertising agency account executive, copywriter and producer/director.

My cooking skills led to a co-host role for three years on HGTV's groundbreaking cooking show "All In Good Taste." I am a trained photographer with work licensed by National Geographic, Kodak and other organizations. I'm a skilled boat handler, cyclist, and an advanced open water scuba diver and snorkeler. And, after a couple glasses of Chianti, an "entertaining" piano player.
