My Voice Experience
Early in my newspaper career, my boss (a well-known speaker in the Midwest), took me aside and said, "You're not ready, your voice is wrong and you've got to lose your accent."
I didn't understand him at first but after two years of almost daily training I had a new, American-broadcast baritone voice instead of a high-pitched sound and no one heard the Minnesota twang I had used since I was a toddler. Training included 3-4 hours of work on the telephone each day on the news desk plus he 'volunteered' me for virtually hundreds of speaking events in front of community groups, local radio and at conferences so he could train me to be comfortable in front of a microphone and large/small crowds. In fact, he often went with me to do some on-location coaching.
He recognized that my voice training as a singer just wasn't being used, especially at work and in front of the public and he changed my life!
