Voice Description

I want to concentrate on narrations, as I feel I do my best work on them. Very smooth,warm, authoritative, the voice of an expert on whatever the subject is. My style is very crisp - very spot on strong diction - perfect enunciation/pronunciation. I have a good mid-range voice...not deep "pipes" nor young boyish either, but a nice, solid mid-range, clear, crisp voice with good voice resonance. I feel that I have an ageless voice, hard to pin down my exact age - I sound younger than my age.

For commercials I can quickly get into any character needed. I can sound "off the wall" and quirky if need be for what the part calls for. I try and remain and act as spontaneous as possible. Quite adept at improvising.

I take great direction to get just the right read for the director. I'm behind the mic to do as perfect a job for someone as I possibly can. And I always "leave my ego at the studio door" before I step into the booth to work.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

Can do a pretty good "Keith Richards" cigarette British accent voice. Not bad at British accents, pretty good at New Jersey/Brooklyn/New York accents, dialects. Pretty fair at impersonations: Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Woody Allen.

My Voice Experience

I started out on the radio doing a live radio show in college back in 1975. I began training my voice to do Top 40 radio announcing - old school style. In 1977 I was 20 when I was hired for my first professional radio job at KOBO in Yuba City. I did live radio shows at the station, and year by year I worked my way up to San Francisco radio by 1980, just over 4 years working professionally in radio. I made previous radio stops in Sacramento, Salinas and Monterey. K101 in San Francisco was my lucky big break in radio being only 23 years old. I was hired to work different air shifts, daytime-nighttime. I voiced many different commercials both recorded and many many LIVE on the air. We still read LIVE spots in radio back in 1980-82. I read spots for furniture stores, car alarms, computer schools, Delta, American Airlines, tire stores, movies.

My next radio job was as copywriter-production director. I worked with the sales staff to create radio commercials, many of which I not only wrote but voiced as well. These were local commercials for restaurants, car dealerships, health spas, shopping centers, etc. I pretty much spent my days putting together recorded commercials - voicing and writing them. Became a production-line job for sure.

As a voice-over, I specialize in narrations and doing two-person conversation commercials. I've done narrations for high tech products with no problems pronouncing very difficult product names.

My Training

I hold a BA degree in Radio-Television broadcasting from San Jose State University. I trained to be a disc-jockey/on-air talent for two years(1975-77) at KFJC Foothill College. At this college I performed my own radio shows in different time slots, first started out doing an early morning show and eventually finishing up doing a nighttime show.

I was hired for my first professional on-air radio job in 1977, just a couple of years after beginning my radio training. I worked professionally in radio in 1978-79 at KDON in Salinas and then into 1979-80 at KOKQ in Seaside/Monterey. I landed a weekend/fill-in on air gig in late 1980 at K101 in San Francisco, just a mere four years after first beginning my radio training.

In college I took courses in television production and for a final project I created a "mock" American Bandstand-type show, with music and dancing and directed from inside the booth.

I learned about voice overs from just being live on the radio. I learned how to develop my voice - to keep on improving the sound and tone of it - to learn how to better pronounce words. I learned by airchecking my shows and listening back to them, self-critiquing them. I kept on pushing, wanting to use my voice more effectively, to have better diction in the words I was saying. It was just a day to day study on how to better myself.

I attended many classes at Voice One, run by the brilliant Elaine Clark in San Francisco. Started taking classes as far back as 1999. Best class I ever took at Voice One was the "Daytime Conservatory" class that met once a week for all day. Learned so very much - learned a lot about proper diction and voice enunciation/pronunciation. Learned to sound more real - more believable in my reads. Took the beginning and the advanced Narration classes with the great Bob Wood. Those were my favorite classes. Received a lot of great feedback about reading narration copy.

I just have a natural ear for voices. I love to listen to the brilliant Ken Nordine, who did some things called Word Jazz back in the late '50s-early '60s. I just listen and study the sound and cadence of his voice and learn from it.

My Studio Equipment

I do not have my own studio.

Additional Skills

I always "park my ego at the studio door" before coming in to do a project. I arrive promptly early, ready to roll my sleeves up and work. I'm there in the booth to do exactly what the director wants me to do - and get it done quickly and the right way. I'm in the booth to not serve my own ego, but to serve what the director/producer wants done for their (not mine) project.

I have a strong background in consumer goods sales as a sales rep for Campbell Soup. I learned the proper way to sell products without being a pain in the neck about it, if you will. Non-hard sell is my style. I learned to deal with personalities A to Z. I learned to be a good listener, and to know when to keep my mouth shut tight. I learned to listen to what a person needs, by active listening. I feel that I bring this skill into the voice over arena where I want to truly understand what a director wants in my voice. Listening is what its all about for me.
