My Voice Experience
I started my broadcasting career in high school at my hometown radio station. My experience includes many years of radio, plus television.
In the military, I wrote, narrated and appeared in a training film for the Armor School at Ft. Knox, KY. The presentation was used for several years for both enlisted personnel and officers of all ranks.
Civilian free-lance experience includes taped and live narrations for church, YMCA, etc., as well as work for independent video and audio production companies.
My degree is in English, with Creative Writing as a minor, from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. While I took no broadcasting courses, I worked my way through college at local radio stations including 50,000-watt WVOK in Birmingham. Now, years later, I am still in broadcasting part-time but branching out more into the private free-lance market.
I am a stickler for proper grammar and knowledgeable departures from it when appropriate. Proofreading is natural for me.
I notice and am disturbed by broadcast commercials in which the announcer emphasizes the wrong words or fails to emphasize the proper ones, thereby failing to convey the meaning intended by the script or copy writer and/or the client. Such an error is nearly always the result of lack of attention to the point or subject matter, on the part of both the announcer and the producer.
A client should get the best job possible from competent, conscientious professionals. That's what he's paying for, and that's what I strive to deliver.
My Studio Equipment
My production room at home includes a 12-channel mixer with output to a computer, Rode microphone, CD players, turntable and cassette deck. My computer is recently upgraded and contains professional audio software including Adobe Audition, Sound Forge, plus CD/DVD recorders.
I have a phone patch, and can deliver by email, ftp, FedEx, UPS or U.S. Mail. I have an extensive collection of production music.
Video will be added in the near future, as I am also a professional photographer and videographer. Current equipment are a high-quality digital Sony still camera and a Sony video camera.
A friendly, pleasant voice is essential to customer relations in any business, whether it is in person, on a commercial, in a product, on the phone or any other.
While basic voice quality is a plus in this, though, it is much less important than having a sincere, enthusiastic attitude behind it. A client, customer, prospect, caller or listener should instantly be made to feel at ease, welcome and important, that the person speaking wants to help them and believes in the company he represents, and that the company itself is competent, dependable, able and anxious to handle their needs, and wants their business.
The best way to do that is to put a smile -- a real one -- on your face and in your voice. Many times, the face cannot be seen, so everything depends on the voice. That is a serious responsibility!
