I have great versatility because I've worked as professional storyteller for +10 years and so I am skilled in creating character voices for stories, animations, video games and commercials. I have a wide pitch range and a good grasp of many UK accents.
I have been told many times that my voice is sexy, even that it sounds like melted chocolate!

My Voice Experience
I have recorded novels for RNIB by numerous writers, using my skills in vocal characterisation to create believable, three-dimensional worlds for three-dimensional characters to exist in. I have also recorded magazines which require a more "presenter" kind of voice, clear and open, and I have hosted a radio series "The Talking Shop" which was broadcast in 2011 on Resonance FM.
I am a qualified Voice Teacher and as such have versatility as well as the skills needed to consciously alter the tone, timbre and pitch of my voice, as well as the skills to analyse and replicate accents.
I am professional and hard-working. If you want a rich, deep, versatile voice which, in it's natural state is often described as "sexy", "chocolatey", then I'm your man and I'd love to work for you. Get it touch!
MA Voice Studies, Central School of Speech and Drama 2004/5
MA English Language & Literature, Oxford University, 1991-3
since 2000 I have been a professional storyteller, making my living with my voice, creating characters and scenes by means of vocal variety.
From 2006-12 I was Lecturer in Voice for Birkbeck College, University of London, teaching vocal development and best practise to drama students. I have also taught at CSSD, Oxford School of Drama, ALRA and Arts Ed. I have taught public voice courses for Harrow Arts Centre, Birmingham Book Week, Warwick Literature Festival, Society for Storytelling. I run a consultancy, the Academy of Oratory, and we work with voice in business. Clients in recent years have included Red Bull, LSIS, eBay, Fox TV, HSBC, BP and more. Working with students has taught me a huge amount about best function in Voice. I have learnt a great deal about the use of voice in an improvised context but also, though all the work in getting text off the page and into the air as a living thing I have learnt a lot about the art of animating the voice to catch, lead and keep attention.
I am a writer and this year wrote story and text to accompany a new 40-minture orchestral work, "Breaking The Wall". The music was recorded by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Nicholas Collen and I recorded the spoken word.
My Studio Equipment
I don't have my own studio but I've worked in several studios. I know how to keep best distance from microphones, how to turn to avoid popping if no pop-screen is available, how to manipulate the properties of a dynamic mic. I would have a studio at home except my flat, acoustically leaky, is under the flight path!
For audition purposes, if a particular text needs to be read, I can use a digital recorder, transfer the file to my computer and email to clients. It won't be broadcast quality but would give skilled ears a good idea of what I can do.
My storytelling career means that my voice has been my professional tool for over a decade. In addition to creating live auditory experiences for my audience, I am a writer, which means that I am skilled in taking text off a page and brining it to life.
I am a writer and I have experience of working with musicians. This year, Breaking The Wall was recorded by the BBC Wales and, er, me! The year before I wrote text to accompany a new composition by the Indian virtuoso Baluji Srivastav and I toured with his group, singing and reciting in English and in Sanskrit. Apart from keeping up with fiendish time signatures it was an interesting challenge to pitch the voice in such a way that it worked with the musicians. I am used to working quickly and efficiently with different sound engineers. Every time I work for RNIB on audiobook or other material I work with different engineers and I'm always amazed by their skills - monitoring levels, watching for peaks AND reading the script to keep accuracy at the same time!
