Dustin Smith

Versatile, baritone, friendly, midwestern voice

Voice Description

My natural baritone voice leans more toward the higher register, so I'm more in line with the goofy best friend or innocent neighbor than the strapping hero of the story.

I can be warm and welcoming for narration, big and loud for commercials, versatile yet smooth for audiobooks and documentaries, wild and wooly characters for cartoons and animations, deliver a goofy sidekick or gruff outlaw for video games, or be a commanding yet lovable dad for TV shows and movies.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

"I'm a Muppet of a Man", to quote Gary from "The Muppets". If you need a Kermit, Bert, Ernie or Cookie Monster style voice, just holler. I can perform almost all the male vocals of the hit musical "Avenue Q". I can whistle through my teeth, so if you're looking for a mangy, old prospector-type from the Wild West, I can do that, too.

My Voice Experience

Although I have an extensive background in theater - performing in stage plays and musical theater since Junior High School - I am just beginning my journey into voice over. I have developed no bad habits that need breaking. Nor any preconceived notions that I may need to look passed. You, the client, can easily direct and mold me to whatever you need. So far, I have provided a few diverse characters to streaming audio commercials for automobile dealerships in Iowa and Wisconsin.

My Training

I have been involved with drama classes and choirs since the 7th grade. I continued that love of drama and singing throughout high school and college. I attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney with a double-major in Musical Theater and Graphic Design. After some soul-searching, I enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and graduated with a BS in Journalism, emphasis in Public Relations and Advertising.

After my time at UNO, I performed a variety of lovable and popular characters in numerous productions at the nationally-recognized The Rose Theater for Children and Families in Omaha, NE. Some of my favorite roles include: LeFou, "Beauty and the Beast"; Iago, "Disney's Aladdin Jr."; and Brother Bear, "The Berenstain Bears Save Christmas."

During my stint as a copy writer at a small ad agency in the area, I was given the opportunity to try my hand at voice acting for a number of streaming audio spots for automobile commercials. After loving the experience, I promptly enrolled for Voice Acting training from John M. Lee at the Omaha Community Playhouse.

My Studio Equipment

My home studio consists of an iMac OS X (10.10 Yosemite) with Garageband and a Shure SM58 microphone. I can send recorded projects via email or my Dropbox account. I also have access to professional studios with state-of-the-art equipment and ISDN and Source Connect capabilities.

Additional Skills

I am very musically inclined having started singing and taking piano lessons since I was 8 years old.

I have taken private singing lessons from Scott D. Miller, formerly of Opera Omaha, for 3 years; private piano lessons for 8 years with David Gerard, who has often played with the Omaha Symphony; and private cello lessons for 8 years, many of those with Steve Laven, currently of the Boston Pops Orchestra.

I have over 8 years of experience copy writing in marketing and advertising, so I'm very familiar with the process that goes into creating radio and television commercials from concept to broadcast. Having been in front of the mic and camera as well as behind them, I'm well aware of the importance of proper pacing in order to deliver a highly-polished product.
