Brian Cohen

Highly adaptable timbre and attitude

Voice Description

My voice has functioned as a multi-timbral accompaniment for many projects. Smooth but not condescending for documentaries, presentations and staff training; energetic and dynamic (if needed, wacky) for commercials; deep, sexy but fun for audio promos. A videographer and friends comment that I can jump easily between many characters and moods.

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

Northeastern (New York, New England), Southern California surfer/Valley, Mel Blanc-type cartoon voices. My voice and all its inflections have been likened to the late George Carlin's.

My Voice Experience

I began work in 2005 as a voiceover artist while editing a University of Virginia staff training video. The producer, Mike Stevenson of Linden Communication Group, heard me read the script as I composited scenes. He liked the warm, common-working-man quality in my voice, so he hired me to narrate. Since then, I have been the voice of COD (Center for Organizational Development), narrating revisions and additions to Web-based video. In 2006, I directed voiceover for Unified Fitness's instructional DVD, which I produced.

My Training

In 1991, I attained my B.S. in Business Admin. with Advertising emphasis from California State University at Hayward. Shortly afterwards, I interned as a news production assistant at KTVU in Oakland, Calif. (which included some training in news anchoring). In the past eight years, I've performed, directed, engineered, and edited VOs in my studio. Presently, in off-hours, I produce video and audio promos--which include my voiceovers--for local schools' events.

I've been a musician since I was nine years old. During and after college, I played and sang in various venues (lots of stories, lots of free drinks).

My Studio Equipment

My studio is completely digital, comprised of an isolated voiceover booth and Mac-based editing station with surround-sound monitoring and mixing services, as well as video editing and DVD/CD burning capabilities.

RELEVANT HARDWARE: Mac G4 PPC, 2GB RAM; Saffire LE audio interface, Mackie 1402-VLZ 14-channel line mixer; TC Helicon Voiceworks harmonizer-corrector, Alesis 3630 compressor/limiter with noise gate; Onkyo 650W surround-sound system; shock-mounted CAD GXL2200 and Shure BG 4.0 condensor mics; Audio Technica Pro 5 dynamic mic; two mic stands (one with auxiliary boom), S3 and Kawai midi keyboard/synthesizers.

RELEVANT SOFTWARE: Cubase 4, Final Cut Pro HD, Soundtrack Pro, SaffireLE, Roxio Toast 6 Titanium

Additional Skills

My background as a video and audio producer, copywriter and scriptwriter, as well as advertising and public relations consultant will assure the client that I will grasp the context of the his message, know the audience, and then convey an effective voiceover. In short, I'll know how it all fits together.
