Brendan O'Toole

Authoritative Narrator Meets Dry History Teacher

Voice Description

Deep, smooth baritone. Natural range is in the classic history narration mold (Civil War documentaries, The Luftwaffe's Greatest Hits, etc). A bit quicker, and it's in sportscaster territory, suited for dry sarcasm. Good clarity in diction, best for corporate videos and how-tos.

My Voice Experience

Every profile here probably starts with "everyone tells me I should be in radio," but in my case it's been true since I turned 13. Ever since I won an essay contest and caused an entire church congregation to wonder how the hell that voice was coming out of a 5'4", 95-pound bespectacled kid, I've tried to find new ways to use my voice. I did a great deal of theatre in college (much to the benefit of my voice and the detriment of my GPA), and since then I've been working in front of crowds, currently doing brewery tours. I'm working on starting up a baseball podcast through my SBN blog (Over the Monster), and now I'm looking to do more.

My Training

During theatre arts study at UMass, I took several courses either devoted to or emphasizing voice training and IPA comprehension. This was followed up by night classes in basic voiceover techniques at Boston Casting.

Additional Skills

As a blogger, I regularly need to write posts (500-1500 words) on a deadline, and can certainly assist in writing/editing copy. Said blog is baseball-focused, so sports names and concepts are very familiar to me. I've read extensively, both academically and personally, on history, and have a good grasp on the subjects/names/places involved. Finally, my experience as a brewery tour guide has given me a good handle on beer and food, which would give me confidence/credibility in any work reflecting those areas.
