Voice Description

I was born in the Mid-West (Cincinnati, OH), raised in the South (Atlanta, GA), and came into my own in the North (NYC) where I now reside. Most people say my accent is "neutral", though one clever cab driver says I have a Cincinnati accent. I have not been there in two decades...

Anyway, I have 2 versions of my voice. There's what I liked to call the Customer Service or Phone Voice, that is soothing, smooth, reassuring, optimistic, confident, and empathetic. I hesitate to throw a name to it, but it's similar to Mark Wahlberg without the accent. I imagine this would be more useful for infomercials, advertising places or new products, presentations, reviews- anything non dramatic or that might require acting. It's just a nice voice to put behind a mission.

My "real" voice, is gravely, weathered, tired, knowledgeable, slower, "he's seen things". I'm sure everyone uses him as an example with his vast success, but it's a younger Morgan Freeman with a Jeff Daniels car commercial vibe. It sounds like the type of person you want advice from, but who doesn't force advice on you. I imagine this would be useful for short ads like car commercials, dramatic roles. I read a Burger King ad in a class I took and the class said it was a very, very interesting voice. "Fresh".

Accents, Impersonations, Characters and Dialects

I don't have a go to accent, but I have a very audio/visually empirical way of emulating or imitating an accent or a voice if given a moment to listen to it. If you really like my voice and/or are will to give me a chance, I can listen to British English, Indian English, and possibly a Spanish English and recreate it with an acceptable amount of accuracy. The same can be said about speaking in a foreign language, even though I don't readily speak any.

My Voice Experience

Since I was a kid, I have always imitated Don LaFontaine, whose name I only found out recently, as "the movie trailer guy." I always do it now for fun with friends to commentate on what they're doing. Outside of that, I really have only recently done voice work for a series of short films that I wrote and directed as an off camera interviewer. I'm just very eager to work and very willing to learn the craft. I've worked at movie theaters off and on for about 10 years and persistently were told by patrons that I needed to do something with my voice. I've dedicated the next couple years trying to find an answer to that.

My Training

I went to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and earned BFA's in Dramatic Writing and Film and Television Production. My passion is writing, and I'd like to some day direct some of the ideas I've come up with. After a woman at the movie theater was a bit more persistent that usual that I do something with my voice, I went and took an introductory class at the Learning Annex. I was pulled aside after the class by the two individuals running it and was told that I had what the industry was craving: "a fresh, conversational voice." Unfortunately, to go any further I needed to pay $100 a session. I work in retail so... And my sister who agreed to pay for it got laid off about a month later. So, that kinda fell apart. However, voice123 has come up two or three times when I've talked to various actors and people about it, and most recently and New York's Comic Con where I sat in on a panel with Stevie Vallance. As I said above, I'm just really eager to learn and take direction extremely well and am not afraid to commit 100% even if it seems "foolish."

My Studio Equipment

I really only have a current generation MacBook Pro that I've recorded some temp voice work on. If push came to shove, I do have a couple of friends that work in studios that I MIGHT be able to record something in. But the turnaround on that might now be ideal.

As for knowledge about studio engineering, I've used Final Cut Express/Pro to varying degrees and, as was the case after film school with being able to see cheated shots or things in reflections, I can tell when certain scenes were dubbed in movies and television versus ones that were shot on site...most of the time.

Additional Skills

I am very creative and have been writing all my life. If ever help or an outside perspective was needed about character development, script or story development, story archs, etc. etc., I'm the guy. I currently have 1 client, and am looking to pick up a few more, where I've done just that. We meet once a month and I give him notes on his script to help him tell the best story he possibly can inside of his premise.

Other than that, I work in Customer Service where tone and nuance is anything when you're being antagonized or a customer comes into a store ready to persecute the first person that will be willing to listen. Being able to read that person, figure them out, and give the appropriate response is key and I feel confident that, that has taught me a lot about what voice can bring to a character.
