Script Details

Helping children transition into adulthood has been a cultural event since the beginning of civilization; however the phenomenon of adolescence – an extended period of development now situated between childhood and adult responsibilities – is a “recent” creation that has generated new forms of education, health care and legal obligations. As a spiritual response to this new age group, Youth Ministry is newer specialized ministry field prompting the need for new training to engage and assist these adolescents in faith development, who are no longer children but not yet ready for the rights and responsibilities of adults.
: As you reflect on the reasons you believe a ministry targeting teenagers and young adults is worthy of your time and the church’s resources – perhaps you recognize this group’s season of life (ranging age 12 – 25 years of age depending on your cultural context) is ripe for spiritual development for a variety of reasons.

One reason is that as teenagers are emerging from childhood, their brains are now ready to facilitate the critical thinking to develop a mature faith in God. Adolescence is a season when many people make faith decisions; a substantial majority of the people who accept Jesus Christ as their savior do so before reaching their 18th birthday. A Barna Research study indicates that nearly half of all Americans who accept Jesus Christ as their savior do so before reaching the age of 13 (43%), and that two out of three born again Christians (64%) made that commitment to Christ before age 18. One out of eight born again people (13%) made their profession of faith while 18 to 21 years old. Less than one out of every four born again Christians (23%) embraced Christ after their twenty-first birthday.
