Emerging research is showing that today’s graduates need more than just academic knowledge to succeed in the workplace. They need other competencies, such as the belief they can succeed and the mindset to persist and practice to master challenging tasks.
BUSS received funding for the Rural Network from the Department of Education through the Investing in Innovation grant which focuses on rural communities and social emotional factors that pertain to education. Additionally, private sector businesses and organizations invested in workforce and economic development are supporting the project and 18 school districts signed on to participate.
Teachers in the project are being trained to infuse their lesson plans with motivation strategies and real-world math, test their lesson plans in the classroom, provide each other feedback, and revise their plans based on feedback. Throughout this process, teachers have the opportunity gather support from the resources and opportunities for collaboration that are available on the virtual network.
The outcomes of the project are both immediate and enduring. BUSS anticipates the project to procure 200 lesson plans by teachers in rural communities that can be used to incorporate STEM-H related math in their classrooms for years to come.
Student math assessment scores will increase by 25%, especially in career readiness and community college math entrance exams.
And more foundationally, the project is creating a sustainable network of math teachers in the Southeast and Southwest areas who can continue to innovate solutions to instructional challenges.
