Script Details

Supervisor: We have some visitors on site today. Will you show them around?

Employee tour guide: Sure. Happy to take care of them. We’ll be sure they all have the right shoes, hard hats, and safety glasses and give ‘em a nice safe tour.

Title: You Are as Important as Our Guests

Employee tour guide: …So, please follow me and watch your step. Our first stop will be… [fades out]
[Sound of machinery hum]

Employee tour guide: [fades back in] …Hey, [actual operator name]… if we could just watch for a minute…
At this point in the production process, a rotary valve moves the [will be accurate and specific here], where you’ll be able to see the catalyst [accurate? “flowing down a conveyor?”].
[Sound of machinery hum]
[Sound: machinery hum suddenly changes pitch]

Visitor: What’s that?

Employee tour guide: It sounds like we’ve got a clog or a jam in material moving through the valve.

Employee tour guide: What happens now is that sensors will notify our control room. If it doesn’t clear up in a few seconds we go to what we call zero energy… we shut it down…

Operator into 2-way radio: “Looks like the valve is jammed.
“We’re shutting it down now.”
Employee tour guide: This is a powerful and potentially dangerous piece of equipment. It exerts [?? Pounds per square inch of pressure—that’s enough to [??], and more than enough to take off a finger or an arm. That’s why you see these yellow danger stickers here and on many other equally powerful pieces of equipment that we maintain and operate with care. That’s why we’re shutting it down.

Voice Over(VO): Guests on site. You’d never think to take a shortcut—even one you may have taken before.
With guests on site, you’d never just grab a pipe to get that machine moving again.
With guests, you’d never take that risk.

VO: But somehow, sometimes, you do a quick little calculation… 30 seconds with a pipe or 20 minutes of LOTO… you’re under pressure to get the product out or get out of work on time… you know the jam will clear with a little poke…
No LOTO. No hassle. No problem.

Operator: Shut it down!
[Sound: machines go silent]

Young visitor: What’s LOTO?

Employee tour guide: LOTO stands for Lock Out/Tag Out. It’s an important safety process to make sure that a machine gets completely shut down – zero energy – and stays shut down while an operator accesses any internal parts.
It’s really important because these machines have dangerous rotating parts that can start moving again very quickly, without notice, and with tremendous force.
It may not look dangerous from where we stand, but trying to take a short-cut—say, just reaching in with a hand or a tool to get the material moving again is a good way to lose a finger or a hand.

Young visitor: Why would anyone do that?

Employee tour guide: Good question! There’s no good reason to take a risk like that.

Employee tour guide: Any one of these machines can cause serious injury if not handled safely. Take this blower for instance. It can (specific description of harm). But, we would never ask someone to take an unnecessary risk just to do their job. That’s why we have such strict procedures.

Employee tour guide (to all visitors): At Grace, we take safety seriously. Every one of us is responsible for our own safety and the safety of our co-workers… we call it peer keeping. Here, if you see one of your peers doing something that may be unsafe, you say something.

We have rules about it and we keep careful statistics so we can find ways to make this place even safer.
But most of all, we take personal responsibility for ourselves and for our co-workers.
No one here wants to see someone get hurt, in fact, “no one hurt” is our goal for the whole company, from machine operators to the office workers in the next building.
[footsteps move away, machinery noise dies down]
