Your hands are getting slippery Lewis! You need some gloves?
(sighs) Maybe I’m not good enough to be a knight.
Edmond looks on with a concerned face. He puts a hand on Lewis’ shoulder.
Of course you are, my boy. You just have to find your courage. And the only way you can do that is to face your fears.
The father-son moment is cut short as Edmond’s warm face quickly turns serious. He alertly looks around.
What is it dad?
…Something’s wrong. Stand your ground son.
The forest becomes eerily silent as Edmond and Lewis hold up their swords, ready to fight. Out of nowhere, a cloud of dark smoke bursts through the trees and rushes behind Edmond. As he turns around, the smoke goes through his chest and transforms into a druid-like demon. It cackles as it clutches Edmond’s heart in its hand, and disappears into thin air. Lewis, witnessing all of this, fearfully looks up where the demon once was.
Lewis looks back and is shocked to find a staggering Edmond staring at him. Edmond falls to his knees.
As Lewis runs to his father, Edmond collapses to the ground. His skin and eyes turn pale.
The next shot shows a stone-faced, cold Edmond lying in bed. Without his heart, he's been reduced to a hollow shell devoid of emotion. A hand appears as it raises a spoon towards his mouth. It is revealed to be Edmond’s wife, Amelia, who attempts to feed him a broth, but fails as it trickles down his lips. Amelia mourns over Edmond as Lewis silently grieves from the doorway. His face changes from sadness to anger and he heads into the woods to search for the demon.
Deep in the woods, Lewis walks along a forest path and unexpectedly hears a mysterious voice.
How adorable. The boy thinks he’s his father by carrying his blade. Yet, he couldn’t even best him in a duel. Let alone save his life. (chuckles)
Show yourself, you coward! Give me back my father’s heart!
If you want it, come and get it.
A gust of wind blows towards Lewis, and a cave appears before his eyes. Lewis walks inside to find an empty cavern, but the entrance vanishes and leaves him in darkness.
Well, I certainly hope you weren’t thinking of leaving.
You know, of all the pathetic hearts I’ve reaped, I’ve never seen one quite as powerful as your father’s.
The demon abruptly teleports behind Lewis, leaning towards his ear.
I think yours would make a lovely addition.
The demon conjures a cloud of smoke around him, transforming into a giant beast, wearing Edmond’s heart around his neck. Lewis readies his blade and charges towards the demon. Sequences of the fight are seen in the light of Edmond’s heartbeats. The demon scuffs Lewis’ cheek and throws him to the ground. As the demon prepares to land the final blow, Lewis quickly rolls from beneath him and stabs through his back. The demon cries in pain and dissipates into smoke, leaving only Edmond’s heart behind and the cave reopened. Lewis goes to pick up the heart and smiles.
Lewis returns to his home to find his mother still at his father’s vigil. Edmond’s heart turns into a white smoke and finds its way back to his chest. His eyes turn from glassy grey to a normal hazel hue. Edmond regains his bearings and grasps his chest. Lewis runs over and gives him a hug.
Dad, I thought I lost you!
Edmond smiles and embraces his son.
I think…I’m finally ready to be a knight.
Son, you were a knight before you even left.
The film ends with a scene of the reunited family hugging.
