Project Main Details

Vegetarian History Scotsmen
I am casting readings for Scottish characters who have played a role in the development of vegetarianism. Most of the readings are from:
* George Cheyne, the eighteenth century diet guru
* John Oswald, an India-inspired revolutionary in 1790s Paris

Some of the other readings may use your other accents (I have a set of readings to do).

This is for a Radio 4 type series on the history of vegetarianism, from the bronze age to the present, broadcast on London's Radio art station Resonance FM.

This project is non-profit, but there is a modest budget for actors. The agreed fee is for all non-commercial use, including release online and broadcast on a community radio station; commercial use (which is unlikely) would be covered separately. That fee would be fully commercial.

Some of the readings are for broadcast on Tuesday, so the deadline is end of play Monday.

Script Details

I am including two one-sentence scripts, to give you a chance to contrast the difference between dynamic angry Oswald and unhealthy Cheyne. Forgive the long description; I figured better include too much than too little.

Young, angry, and revolutionary. Originally from Edinburgh. This is one young vegetarian who returns from India wanting to set the world to rights (anti-slavery, feminism, animal rights) and is prepared to kill to do it. He’s in his early 30s in the 1790s.

This reading conveys just how impressed John is by Indian ethics, but it has some archaic phrasing. Notes:
* The word “Hinduism” hasn’t emerged yet, so that’s probably why he uses the circumlocution “mythology of Hindustan”.
* “Consecrated” is more concerned about the practical impact of getting people to treat animals with respect than its religious meaning
* “The Deity” is just God; John Oswald’s peers tended to believe in a detached generic monotheistic creator, even if they weren’t Christian.

The merciful mythology of Hindustan has consecrated, by the metamorphosis of the Deity, every species of animal.

This larger-than-life physician is the original autobiographical diet guru.

He's from the countryside near Aberdeen, but has pretentions to society.

Personal battle will ill health and obesity? Check.
Novel scientific theories? Check.
Best-selling diet books? Check.

Much is this is from his Essay “The Case of the Author”, which is the tale of his own illness and recovery with a milk diet. Although even when in recovery, he would be medically obese.

He also supplies the scientific theories that underpin the idea of emotional “Sensibility” that Jane Austen will parody almost a century later, and applies it to his posh clientele.

So the tone is a zealous confident; think of an evangelical Christian “witness” telling the story of hour their life fell apart before they discovered the *single idea* that would bring it back together again.

Constantly dining and supping in taverns, and in the houses of my acquaintances of taste and delicacy, my health was in a few years brought into a great distress.
Please note that you should only use the script or your recording of it for auditioning purposes. The script is property, unless otherwise specified, of the voice seeker and it is protected by international copyright laws.
