Eventually, our mother remarried, and we all went to live with her and our step-father. Our step-father would beat our mother badly. Several times we were taken to the orphanage.
At the orphanage we didn’t like the rules. We set our own rules. We’ve seen our parents’ behavior, and would do what they did.
Sometimes we would drink alcohol, smoke, hangout, But our mother would take us back home. Alcohol grew stronger in our family, and our step-father would beat our mother really bad. And when we tried to defend her…he would beat us as well.
I really didn’t like my step-father then. And I thought, when I grow up, I wanted to hurt him, the same way he used to hurt my mom. Thoughts like that would come to my mind.
When I was 12, I lived in an orphanage, a group of volunteers came to our orphanage, they held a presentation for us and, gave us the Book of Hope and I learned about Jesus. I took the Book of Hope, and I began to read it. I came to realize that I shouldn’t do what I was going to, that God is to judge people, not me.
At that moment, my life began to change since I started to read the Book of Hope. I began to understand more, and most of all, I was thinking about God.
After a little while, my mom died. [long pause] I asked God, “why is He taking what means the most to us?”. It was really hard for me to accept…[long inhale] that the closest and the dearest person to me is not with me. It is really hard.
I didn’t feel like going anywhere, But I wanted to read the Book more and more, to go deeper into it, to understand what I was reading. This book really helped. I’ve learned to forgive, to value, to love, to respect.
I’ve learned how to pray, every night I thank God that I can see the world with His eyes, not mine. I go to school, do not miss classes, do sports, and have some success in it. I have new friends, new people that I don’t feel like escaping with to go around the corner to smoke or drink.
And even though my mom is not with me anymore, God is changing my life completely.
