Project Main Details

United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in the Balkans
Production is a three-minute documentary film that will be part of an installation at the First Division Museum at Cantigny.

Story: On August 28, 1997, virtually without warning, large crowds of Bosnian-Serb civilians attacked peacekeepers around Brcko. 1st Infantry Division (1 ID) soldiers defended the Brcko bridge, the radio tower and corralled mobile riot crowds. The importance of their superior training and discipline was evident as they fended off attacks from nearly 2,000 civilians without using violent force. On that one day, the 1 ID learned valuable lessons about stability operations and handling contentious situations in the Balkans.

Script Details

After the breakup of Yugoslavia, fighting broke out amongst the Serbs, Bosniaks, and Croats. Over 100,000 people were killed.

In 1995, the Dayton Accord offered a pathway to peace for the region. And the 1st Infantry Division was sent to enforce the agreement.

On August 28, 1997, the 1st Infantry Division responded to intelligence reports that hardline Serbs intended to restart the war.

Finally, at 5PM, the exhausted crowd gave up and dispersed.
