The Unisys Security Index, conducted in April 2017, is the only recurring snapshot of security concerns conducted globally.
Online surveys were performed with nationally representative samples in each of the thirteen countries throughout the world.
The Unisys Security Index is calculated based on people’s security concerns in four key categories:
• National Security
• Financial Security
• Internet Security
• Personal Security
The 2017 Security Index shows that anxiety over security is rising significantly around the world.
The 2017 index stands at 173, increasing 30 points since 2014..
Unauthorized access to, or misuse of your personal information from Identity theft ranks first among the eight security threats identified in the Unisys Security Index, with 65 percent of those surveyed saying they are seriously concerned about this Personal Security issue.
Bankcard fraud ranks a close second among the eight threats in the Security Index with 64 percent of those surveyed expressing their serious concern for their Financial Security.
Personal Security, including identity theft and personal safety, increased 15% from 2014.
Internet Security now ranks third highest in 2017 showing by far the biggest jump of the categories with a 33% increase.
National Security, which includes security as it relates to war or terrorism and disaster or epidemic, now ranks fourth despite a 19% increase in concern level.
When looking at the results by country, the index showed that while security have been traditionally high in developing countries including the Philippines, Mexico, Malaysia, Brazil and Argentina, the concern is increasing at a faster rate in developed countries including the US.
With security issues at an all-time high comes changes in people’s awareness, attitudes and practices that span the globe.
Solutions to security problems can be driven through modifications in behavior, .reducing risk, changing business practices, creating new policies, and developing innovative technology solutions.
Remaining informed and educated on security precautions and alerts remains a key best practice, as security will continue to be a top of mind global threat in the years to come.
Unisys plays a prominent role in efforts to combat risk through the technology solutions and services it provides to governments and major industries across the globe.
Unisys’ commitments to public and financial safety and security are the reasons for the creation of the Unisys Security Index in 2007 to monitor progress in these areas.
So what can companies and government agencies that serve consumers do?
While the list is long, Unisys believes there are tangible steps they can take.
