The Ellavi UBT Explainer Video

Postpartum hemorrhage can happen to any woman anywhere, but 99% of all deaths occur in low resource areas, such as Sub-Saharan Africa. These women’s deaths leave children without mothers and communities devastated. These deaths can be prevented.

Solving this problem requires a dedicated team to work together to save lives. Introducing the Ellavi uterine balloon tamponade, or UBT. This innovative medical device is designed to address the challenges caregivers face: to stop postpartum bleeding due to uterine atony.

This video explains the benefits and usage of the Ellavi product.

SCRIPT:
This is it. The moment of birth. A moment that mothers live for: the first day as a mother with a newborn baby. Sadly, in low resource areas this moment can be a matter of life and untimely death due to postpartum hemorrhage. These women’s deaths leave children without mothers and communities devastated. Postpartum hemorrhage can happen to any woman anywhere, but 99% of all deaths occur in low resource areas, such as Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Ellavi UBT was designed in Africa for Africa by a biomedical engineering firm, Sinapi.

Sinapi designs and manufactures high quality, affordable medical devices that have a life-saving impact. The collaboration between PATH, Sinapi, and key partners such as the South African Medical Research Council has advanced the Ellavi UBT solution. This provides a better option that fills the gap between prohibitively expensive UBTs and condom catheter balloons assembled at point of care. The Ellavi fills the gap between these self-assembled condom catheters and expensive UBTs. Ellavi is fully assembled, quick to deploy, cost-effective and clinically tested. It is priced at a mere 1/20th of the cost of expensive UBTs produced in developed countries.

Simply add water and lift up the bag. Insert the balloon into the uterus and open the tap. The balloon fills with water and expands to apply adequate pressure to the uterus wall and stops the bleeding. Ellavi is deployed in less than two minutes. Ellavi’s free flow system is unique. It allows the uterus to contract freely displacing the water into the bag. Uterus contraction also stops bleeding. The wall of the uterus contains muscles that cross over each other and close the bleeding arteries as the muscles contract.

Healthcare providers can now have increased confidence that they will have an effective, easy-to use tool to save a mother's life. This innovation turns the tide in the global effort to reduce mortality and common complications from postpartum hemorrhage.

Together with maternal health advocates, policy makers, health care workers and donor organizations we can help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number 3 by the year 2030 to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births. It is estimated that the use of UBTs could save 169,000 lives over the next 15 years and prevent complications in more than 1 million mothers over the same period. Ellavi can make this a reality.

Ellavi Uterine Balloon Tamponade. A mother is the whole world to a child. Help us save that world.
