Project Main Details
tormented relationship with industrial mining. The essay “The Battered Wife,” published in
Unearthing Paradise: Montana Writers in Defense of Greater Yellowstone, is part of a
community effort to stop Lucky Minerals from mining for gold in parts of Paradise Valley. The
film The Battered Wife is its visual adaptation on screen. Read aloud, the essay will come alive
through cinematography and sound. Juxtaposing images around Emigrant Peak and Snowbank
Campground—areas under threat—with the already heavily mined areas of Butte and Virginia
City, the film will visually tell the story of Montana’s relationship with industrial-scale mining.
The Battered Wife is a poetic take on the standard conservation documentary.
Personifying the land under threat of mining as a wife in an abusive relationship creates a
relatable and personable concept residents in the greater Yellowstone area can identify with.
Adapting this creative non-fiction essay for film will bring awareness to the current mining threat
in Paradise Valley, all the while stimulating interest in the preservation of public lands by
approaching the conservation documentary from a more artistic angle.
With compelling images and moving narration, The Battered Wife calls Montanan’s to
question the longevity of prosperity in an industrial mining community and the intentions of these
large corporations. The Battered Wife will illuminate the exploitation happening right in
Yellowstone’s backyard and inspire locals to become active participants in the fight for the
preservation of America’s wilderness.
